Position Draft: West, check your PM for Password

Any interest in a position draft? We do 12 rounds. First Player to draft in a round choses the position for that round. We'd draft all 9 positions, 2 starters, 1 reliever. Pick 3 to determine order, high to low (draft position 1 to 12).

Rounds would be drafted as follows:

[1] 1 to 12
[2] 9 to 8
[3] 4 to 3
[4] 12 to 11
[5] 7 to 6
[6] 3 to 2
[7] 10 to 9
[8] 5 to 4
[9] 11 to 10
[10] 2 to 1
[11] 6 to 5
[12] 8 to 7

Re: Position Draft?

Sounds like fun. What do you do about DHs? I assume the DH would have to be the last position player picked, correct?

clarifying questions

Postby Jablowmi » Wed Feb 15, 2006 9:11 am

If we're picking CF, can I pick Yount (primary position on card = CF)? If we're picking 1B, can I pick Brett (primary position on card = 3B)?

Yeah I guess the question is does it have to be the primary position of that player or anybody who shows up when you search the FA list by that position?

DH can be any hitter, can be selected at any round.

Position does not have to be primary.

Will there be a DH round? It seems so since you have a 12 round draft but only slotted 3 rounds for drafting pitchers. You may want to have an exra pitching round instead of the DH round so that not everyone's auto draft card will start with 2 starters.

I'm not sure that's going to be a problem. After all, we're talking about the 25th best SP, and there would probably be some debate as to who that would be, especially given the 80s mystery card format. (Some players, I think, would gamble on a big year, while others would look for consistency among the cards.) Plus, I would also think that a RP or two would also be listed high on the draft card, since we're only drafting 1 RP.

My thought is that a decent DH is more important that a #3 SP, and the goal was to give everyone a #1 pick that means something.

Since we're only going to be autodrafting 13 players (6 of whom will be relatively unimportant bench players), there's going to be duplication on draft cards. I don't see any way to avoid that, outside of drafting 24 rounds, and that would take a very long time to do. (We can't use Penn's website, I think, because the draft order is going to change every round.)

That said, if everyone would indicate whether they would rather chose a 3rd SP over a DH, I'll go with the majority view. If it's tied 6/6, we'll go with drafting the DH.

I like the original rules, Toisan. I don't know that I'd put my 3 and 4 SPs first. After all, I'll have platoon partners and a bullpen to worry about!
