Why I love this game (part 74)

I'm lucky enough to be in a pennant race with my first team, and I do mean lucky(75-54 with a negative run differential). I've gotten to this point with pitching and defense, so when I see Fernando on the wire I drop Key and Damaso Garcia to pick him up along with Lind.

Then Bowa goes down for 10 games, and since I can't stand the thought of Riles at short for so long at this critical time I drop Baker and nab a recycled Luzinski and Guillen.

So in last night's first game Dennis Martinez loses a perfect game on an error by...Jose Lind, and in the third game I win in the bottom of the 9th on a Guillen triple followed by a Lind base knock.

Baseball is king. And 80's strat is pretty damn cool.

Here's the link, and you'll see why I'm feeling like the lightweight in this five-way battle for three spots.

Hey, AB. Not a bad start for your first team. Is there any offense available (for Driessen)? It seems that you have a lot of $ you may be able to shift to a couple of positions and get an advantage there. For ex, it looks like you're using a 5 man staff. Can you trade one of them for a hitter? Also, I'm not sure how much more Bowa will give you than Oz. If you dump Bowa outright, you can replace Driessen with a $5.9M guy (with the $0.70 you have in reserve). I'd give up some D at first to get someone that can hit there. You could also shift Lansford there and pick up a 3B.

What's out there on the wire at 1B/3B? Any other 1s in CF?

LMB,
Thanks for taking the time to look my team over and offer your input. Driessen has actually been one of my best clutch hitters with lots of doubles, and an injury revealed one of his two best OBP years (my weakest area).
The available 1B are Hernandez(out of my price range), Hrbek(bad numbers for another owner in many ABs) and Glenn Davis (unused, but I need a lefty). Cey/Gaetti/Knight are all available and unused 3Bs, but again I'm pretty set from the right.
I may take your advice and drop Bowa, use the money to upgrade the bullpen. I may have a pathological thing about pitching and D. By the way, I'm using a 4-man rotation with Darwin first out of the pen.
Again, thanks. We'll see how it goes - either way, I'm having a blast. I started a 2005 team after this one, but the thrill is already gone after just two weeks, even though the team is doing o.k.

I like your team.

I concur with Jablowmi that you could use a little more "uumph" in your offense. As great as Tony Pena is doing for you, he's playing way over his head even on his best card. So it is with statistics, what goes up, eventually will come down.

Here's what I would advise: dissect your playoff contenders' teams and figure out what their strengths and weaknesses are. (Especially your divisional rival.) After you figure out who you're mostly likely to see in the playoffs, make a move from the waiver wire that is going to take advantage of their weaknesses the best.

That one extra hitter or pitcher could be a difference maker for your playoff run.

You can say that again.

Good luck.

Thanks, bjs.

I agree that I should do something to boost my hitting, and I'm leaning towards Ron Cey. I'll wait until the last minute (game 138 I think) first to see how Luzinski does.

As far as analyzing my opponents, it seems pretty tough with unknown cards and recent drop/adds that could prove the overall splits inaccurate. And there's no way the playoff picture will be clear before the deadline.

One side note - 3 teams in the Central play in the Kingdome! Glad I didn't end up in that division.

Oh, and Jablowmi - I meant to thank you, not LMB. Gettin' all you vets mixed up. :D
