Great tip on Sid in Royals--and check this team OBP...

Edit: See below for update....

I've got a new team, pre-waivers, in Royals and picked up Herr in the autodraft. I've had reasonable success with Herr in the past, but Doran is on the FA table and I'd have a fair shot at him if I choose him on waivers. They actually seem to be pretty similar players and rather close in value, so it seems like a hard call. Either seems like a pretty good fit for Royals.

I've never used Doran before but I'm sort of leaning toward trying to get him. The argument for Doran would seem to be: 1) better range, 2) faster, 3) offense almost as good, 4) faster, 5) cheaper.

The argument for Herr would seem to be: 1) higher OBP, 2) better years are better than Doran's best years, 3) low errors.

To me, the Doran package looks a little better, especially since he costs less, but I'm wondering what your experience has been.

Take them both, if you can find the money. Why not be greedy? (Leave 2B open on your roster for a couple of series, maybe three, and see what HAL thinks of them. Need to face both LHP and RHP.)

Or you could use one as a DH until you can get a feel for what cards you have, then drop or trade the loser for a real DH. Worst case, it shouldn't be hard to find a cheap DH on the waiver wire.

That's a good idea.

I've used both but the only one that finished a season for me was Doran. His price tag is better though his .219 card is awful.

Herr almost never fits into my budget though I ended up with him on my 2000+ Win Challenge team via the autodraft. I've got his last card with even balance.

I think Herr is a freak. How can you hit 2 HR's in 561 AB's (1989) and be "N" power both ways? If that isn't funny enough, how can he be "W" power both ways on his 1983 card with 2 HR's in 313 AB's?

I'd love to get him on his 83 or 85 card sometime and take it for a test drive but it hasn't worked out that way.

All in all, I lean towards Doran too but only because he's got a better price and better HR numbers overall. The better speed doesn't hurt either.

Doran in Royals

75 games into a Royals stadium season, here are Doran's stats:

187 ABs, 20 runs, 8 doubles, 2HRs, 22 RBIs, 15 BBs, 4SBs, 5 errors. He's batting .316, .390 SLG., .365 OBP.

He started slowly, and after some batting order experiments, he settled best (at least on this team) leading off. He's hitting lefties and righties equally well.

In the same league, Herr is playing on a Fenway team. .267BA, .387 SLG, .344 OBP-- similar OPS to Doran but Herr is currently second in the league in overall errors, with 20.

At Royals, I'd definitely go for Doran.

Keeping both Doran and Herr is any intriguing idea but I can't really spare the cash--I've got Greenwell at DH and want to keep him. He seems like a good fit for Royals, especially if I luck out with one of his big years. I think I'll try to draft Doran on waivers but not be too heartbroken if I miss him.

Thanks for the input. I'll keep you posted. :D

I think you take Doran and hope. He's a 1 and that won't change even if he's in a bad season. Re: Herr, he has two great years and if you get them, you're golden. But, his other three years are "Remy" years for $3M more.

Missed Doran--

I had Stieb higher on my waiver list and got him, somewhat to my surprise. So I missed Doran in the waiver grab and am sticking with Herr for now. I figure I can keep him until I see if I got one of the good years, then possibly drop for Marty Barrett or whomever if need be. My two previous tries with Herr did have the good years, so maybe I'll get lucky again.

I have Fat Sid on this team--my first try with him. I'm hoping he's a good fit with Royals. I also have Rickey, Carew and Molitor. I'm thinking of hitting them in that order at the top of the lineup, then adjusting based on the year. Does that make sense to you?

I clicked on your link and I don't see Fat Sid on your team. You must have dumped him already for something else. Anyway, I like the looks of your Royals team.

--but grabbed Grich...

Somebody just dropped Grich, so I grabbed him. He isn't a perfect fit for Royals but should give more offense than Herr no matter how you slice it and will provide some protection in the HR parks--at least in his good years.

I had to let Sid Fernadez go to get Grich but was never completely sold on Sid being worth the big bucks, anyway... :D

You just got cold feet because your 2 squads got into his kitchen in the leagues that we're in together. Besides Higuera, he's probably the best LH pitcher in the game. I'm not saying he's undroppable but he always stands a chance to win Cy Young regardless of the ballpark. He'd be a terrific fit in Royals in my opinion.

Sigh. What's done is done.

Before I go any further, I am officially taking your tassel on your 80's mortar board cap and moving it over to the right side for you. You've graduated. You've come of age. You've earned it:

Consider yourself a veteran.

Grich is ok. You pretty much know fairly soon if you hit pay dirt or not. Taking Grich over Herr is a good move. What could make it weak is what you took to replace Sid the Kid. What's your pitching staff look like?
