I had a league start last night and I decided not to put in my lineups. This is what Hal did.

Cruz - LF
Dawson - CF
Mattingly - RF
Fisk - 1b
G. Bell - 2b
Cal - SS
Morrison - 3b
Engle - C
Sweet Lou - DH

Now granted Morrison hit 3 HR's in the first game, but I have Evans for RF not Mattingly, and Hojo for 3rd. Why would he put Bell in at 2nd and DH Lou. Something is very fishy in HAL's house. By the way I went up against 1 righty and 2 lefties and the players were the same except that Lou batted 8th against rightys and 9th against lefties. :? :? :?

I've thought about it, and what makes sense is that HAL assembles batting orders and line-ups totally at random.
Otherwise, what is the point of us doing the managing?
If HAL is making line-up decisions, then over the course of the first week of the season you could experiment with holes in your lineup and let HAL tell you who is best to use.
But the random approach makes us pick a line-up and play the game which is the purpose of it.
I've noticed, for example, (I think) if you let HAL make decisions on starters, it starts with the most expensive and works its way down.
Once the game begins, HAL tries to make decisions based on your settings (albeit a lot of times it doesn't make sense).
But I think letting HAL set your line-up is a fool's game. I don't think the programming enables it to pick the best players for the position. It looks at who you have and picks one so you end up with Engle catching and Fisk at first.
Setting the line-ups is our job.
