March Madness Bracket 4- The curse of Don Mattingly

Postby ccangerame » Sat Apr 15, 2006 1:36 pm

Well, we are the only region without a board so I thought I would get the ball rolling. Our region got off to an interesting start when the #1 pick in the waiver draft was denied due to not having enough money- (Something I have never seen at the top of the waiver board)- It will be interesting track Mattingly's progress to see what happens thru out the year.

Overall - alot of different squads and moves I am sure still to be made

Good luck to all

Worst waivers mistake ever. After a horrid autodraft (I got my 4 SP, Tettleton, Dale Murphy, Glenn Davis, and Steve Kemp and that's about it) I had the first waivers pick. I originally had Mattingly being picked up with Hrbek being dropped and had plenty of cash. But I traded Hrbek the night before and neglected to change my waiver pick, so i ended up about 500k short of having enough cash to pick up Mattingly. So I lost my first pick and left myself with with a hole at 1B and a lack of left-hand batting. I'll have to pray that Vance Law, Greg Gagne, and Ken Phelps can create enough offense at those positions. Ugh.

I don't think I've ever disliked a team going into the season as much as I dislike this one, and I'll be lucky to escape the first round. I'll definitely be scouring the transaction lines early in the season looking for the early drops.

You're in Good Company

I've pulled that "smooth move" before too. I was the #1 seed in the waiver wire and was looking at getting Henderson for the first pick. Well, I miscalculated my money situation. Then when waivers ran I had missed out on the biggest upgrade that I could have made for my team.

I got 8 of my hitters and 7 of my pitchers getting me to the 10th waiver spot. All in all not too bad. The waiver round went well and I've been able to piece together a squad that I think will be competitive.

I'm still thinking about one more move before season start. If anyone is in the market for Kent Tekulve for a quality reliever under 1.03, I'm listening.

i,ve had so many teams with good hitting and no pitching and vice a verse that i,ve learned just to take it 1 series at a time....we be learnin this game for a long time to come.ha ha....just havin fun with all you champions and lookin forward to some more SOM baseball....

Yeah I about fell out of my chair when I saw the waiver results. Glad to see that someone else has done this before, BJ. Not that it'll make my team any better.

Yellow Dog, after reading your post I thought there's one less team to worry about. 8) Then I looked at it and I'd say it's pretty good. Your only weakness is at 2B and you still could get good cards from Ripken or Law. Of course at 1B the only Phelps card I've got is 1989. I think the program that chooses has 5 1989s in there. You can always play Wallach at 1B. If you do well you can thank me for Lemon and Ripken.

My team is just hoping to hang in for another round. I need to get some quality cards or at least have some early revelations of the bad ones. I couldn't believe both Mattingly and G. Carter were available and I was stuck around eighth. I got 16 players from my list but not enough of them were top notch. I've got to learn to not try and draft players that I like if I know no one ever takes them.

Kiss of Death

Postby ccangerame » Sat Apr 15, 2006 7:04 pm

Didn't get what I wanted in the autodraft but did get lucky with some of replacement picks- Wanted - Ripken- got Trammell- Wanted Sandberg got Whitaker- Wanted Raines- got Baker- ughhhhh- two for three is not bad- suprised to see alot of good pitching out there for the waiver draft- I am pretty comfortable with my preseason moves, although my bullpen is held together with ducktape, picked up Hrbeck in a trade for W. Wilson, and got Carter,Saberhagan and Gibson in waivers - my best waiver draft ever pending the cards -Can't wait to get this league started, looking in my division all of the teams look pretty good- especially NY Calderon's squad- hopefully that will be their kiss of death- like a good-looking girl from across the room until you get up close

I guess you can't complain about the autodraft when you land Yount. But I screwed up managing the salary cap. I figured that if I was lucky enough to get Yount that I'd be able to pick a Dwayne Murphy or Moseby in waivers to play CF. No CFs were available. Put Hershiser #9 on draft card. Didn't expect to get him but thought I'd get a decent SP instead. Wanted Stieb (#6 on draft card) got Gubicza. Couldn't pass up Blyleven during waivers (figuring Mattingly was gone). Bottom line - right now I have Pettis starting in CF due to salary cap. I guess that's why I'm the lowest seed in the bracket. Hopefully my pitching will carry me into the next round so I can try again.

Great thread!

I am fairly confident of enough wins to advance to the next round with my Eggo Waffles (but then again who isn't). I was pleased with the results of the AD. My misses on starting players were: Went for T. Pena #11 got Hassey. Went for Remy #17 got B. Ripken. Went for Pedro Guerrero #3 got Jose Cruz. Went for Butler #6 got Moseby. Went for Reuss #8 got Hammaker and I missed on every RP I wanted except K. Dayley.

As it turns out most of the parks in this league are power parks so I was not unhappy to have gotten Moseby in CF. I was going to get rid of Hassey but seeing that I had a lot of power guys I decided that I needed his OBP to bat in front of some of those guys. I was bummed at not getting my planned Julio Cruz/Remy 2B platoon but I was able to trade for Oester which will get me by (hopefully). I also got Goose Gossage in that Oester deal which should also help out my shaky pen.

I figured Mattingly would be gone before my 8th waivers selection so I went for Strawberry and really didn't think he would be there either. I lucked out! Now I am a little worried that I have too many LH batters in the lineup. Cal Ripken isn't complaining though!

Looking forward to the season. Good Luck guys.
