Joe Cowley, who had been struggling as Chicago's #2 starter, pitched the game of his life on Friday night, throwing the 1986 season's first complete game no-hitter, beating the AL East-leading Detroit Tigers by the score of 1-0.

Said the star of the game, "This is the greatest moment in my career! Just, whatever you do, please don't use the headline 'Holy Cowley' tomorrow."

Art imitates life

Real life Joe Cowley threw a no hitter in one of his last starts with the White Sox. It was even uglier than this one, in which he loaded the bases in the 6th with a walk, SB, error, and HBP. In '86, he walked 7, walking in a run, but NO HITS!

Real life Joe Cowley was out of the major leagues in just 7 more starts. Let's hope fake Joe, who entered the game with an ERA of 10.26, has a longer post-career-highlight epilogue.
