Key allowed no runs and just 5 hits in his seven innings of work. Reliever Dennis Lamp pitched the final 2 innings, allowing a couple of runs, but Toronto's eight runs were too much for Boston to overcome.
With the loss, the Red Sox were buried further into the 2nd tier of the American League East. Boston is in 6th place in the division and are 17.5 games back of the Blue Jays. If the Red Sox are to match fans' pre-season expectations of a division crown, they must gain some ground before the final couple months of the season.
