Red Sox starter Bruce Hurst had an easy time for his CG shutout. Of Boston's 12 runs, 11 came off the bat of just two players. Jim Rice homered, doubled and drove in 5 runs while Bill Buckner tore it up for 2 homers, and 6 RBI. White Sox starter Neil Allen pitched more like Woody Allen as he allowed 6 earned runs on 5 hiits with 3 walks in 2 2/3 innings.
[b:16d9f99859] Over in the NL...[/b:16d9f99859] The Houston Astros are back to within 2 games of the first place Padres as they rallied in the bottom of the 9th as the Astros defeated the Braves, 4-3. Braves closer Gene Garber did his best big bad wolf impression as he huffed and puffed and blew the save again for the 11th time this year. Garber now sits at an eye-popping 0-9 this year. The win went to Aurelio Lopez who improved to 4-2 on the year but hardly pitched well enough to earn it.
In the bottom of the 9th, Jose Cruz led off with a single to shallow center. After one batter was retired, Dickie Thon slapped one to shallow center as well forcing Cruz to hold at second. Smelling blood, the Astros sent Phil Garner to the plate as a PH who singled the other way, getting Houston within a run. Stepping in was Billy Hatcher who laced a single down the RF line, driving in both the game tying run as well as the game winner. The Padres would like to thank Gene Garber for the great effort.
