Clemens (18-7) pitched seven strong innings, allowing just 5 hits while striking out seven.

Calvin Schiraldi pitched the final two innings in relief to earn his 14th save on the season.

Jack Morris (14-5) pitched well enough to keep Detroit in the game, allowing just 6 hits and notching 10 strikeouts, but in the end the Tigers sputtering offense could only manage one run.

With the win, Boston completed an impressive 4 game sweep of the Tigers... in Detroit. The Red Sox now trail Toronto by just 6 games in the AL East.

In National League Playoff Races... The Mets regained the East division lead after [u:c90506d889]New York defeated the Phillies 6-4[/u:c90506d889] and [u:c90506d889]St. Louis lost 1-0[/u:c90506d889] as Floyd Youmans tossed a two hitter for the Expos.
