The home run, Diaz' 25th of the season, came off Reds reliever John Franco, and it couldn't have come at a better time for the Pirates. With the win, Pittsburgh is back to .500 (66-66), and now trail the Mets by 6 games in the NL East.

The Pirates were trailing 6-3 after six innings... but climbed back in the game on Jim Morrison's two run HR in the 7th inning, which set up Diaz with the chance for some 9th inning heroics.

The Chicago White Sox [u:c2663c6099]defeated the Kansas City Royals 2-1[/u:c2663c6099]... with outfielder Hal (Not That HAL) Baines driving in the winning run with two outs in the 13th.

In Montreal, the Expos rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to [u:c2663c6099]defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5[/u:c2663c6099] and keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

The Detroit Tigers scored 3 runs in the 11th inning to [u:c2663c6099]defeat the Mariners 8-6[/u:c2663c6099]. With the loss, Seattle's playoff hopes went up in flames. The Mariners season now is all about pride (and trying not to lose 100 games).

In New York, the Mets allowed all six runs with two outs in the 9th inning, giving the [u:c2663c6099]San Francisco Giants a 6-2 come from behind victory[/u:c2663c6099].
