Summer of 69 - ROUND 3 - DRAFT IN PROGRESS - GO, GO, GO!

Our historical single season sets

my 2 cents for now

I would be willing to participate in such a series of leagues, provided we can work out the kinks.

And though I appreciate the confidence and can help, I can't volunteer to be commissioner for the whole shebang. I have child #4 due Dec. 4 and will have quite a few distractions leading up to and after that. I plan to keep participating, just can't be the main driver.

I also am not sure how excited I am about the idea of the bottom three funding the winners' prizes. There is enough incentive to win - we don't need a disincentive in my view. If everyone throws in $10 per league you would have a $600 prize pool for a 5 league tourney. Then come up with a formula for allocating places 1-3 and divide 300/200/100, as suggested. I am fine with giving greater weight to W/L record and maybe less to playoffs. Just need a set formula.

We may need to collect funds up-front to prevent people dropping out. Not dropping out dishonestly, I trust our group, just because real life sometimes requires such changes.

I'm not interested in any kind of cash or gift prizes so I'm out.

Just need 12 guys word from the managers we play with

Postby Rjnewman » Wed Aug 19, 2009 1:42 pm

I love bottom three pay and the handicaps included. It creates two pennant races and encourages people not to quit or make one sided trades. If everyone gives their word and participants are guys we know. I will pay for anybody that does not. Who wants to spend a year in a tourney with managers they know in a TSN format that they obviously love and play all the time, and welch?I can afford it. Could Franky or Risden Bombers or other be Commissioner? I will gladly write up format completely and open for tweaks and then start sign up. I need more experience to get it all right ongoing. RJ

I could be commissioner but I've never set up a league in somdraft, so I'd have to learn that. It will be difficult to find a set of rules that 12 people will want to play. Here are some ideas that I'd throw out for people to kick around:
1) no prizes (people interested in prizes PM me or rjnewman and we work out a separate system only for those interested)
2) 200, 100, 80, 60, 40 tournament
3) in each draft, the team with the most points gets 10% less cap second 8% third 6% 4-9 place 4% less cap and 10th-12th place full cap.
4) som draft for 20 players and stadium; in each draft, use reverse order of point total?
5) keepers? stadium keepers?
6) DH, no DH, DH in select leagues?

What would people like to see to make a challenging, fun tournament that is not extremely complex to keep track of rules during in-season play?

I'd be careful about that declining cap thing because that's not something the system can easily assist with.

Somebody would have to keep track of caps of all teams, and that can be really tough especially when teams make lots of transactions with the 20% penalty.

I can help set-up the somdraft.com part, Franky.

I am not concerned about "welching". But I am not ashamed to say I am not willing to risk having to pay $300 if I finish last and just think we'd be better off with a uniform contribution. People aren't going to tank when they have $25 for the team plus a $10 prize contribution invested. To me that's a big enough investment for this format.

I see LMB is out if there are prizes and I fear we will have trouble getting a full 12 commited - he is one of our core guys.

I would participate with no prizes as well if need be, or would be willing to pitch in $10 per league if everyone agrees to that. I am ok with the rest of the discussion. I think Bill is right on the cap though.

If the variable cap is too complex, we could try some alternative ideas to increase competitiveness. Maybe variable number of keepers, or free agent picks before the start of a draft.

I also think that if LMBombers will play without prizes, then we should have no prizes, or only an opt-in for prize competition.

prizes dont have to be included or cash could be smaller

But I thought it would be more fun and crucially having bottom three pay will keep everyone's interest all the way and avoid roboteams or guys losing interest. Im thinking it is pretty important. Why not take gdwarfs option of a dollar amount per season added cumulatively for five season format but apply it only to bottom 6 teams at end to pay top 3 with other three being no pay no win. Cap reduction is easy to handicap because it will be recalibrated before each season off the cap number only once. For example in season three at 80 million cap the cumalitive points leader gets 10% LES OR 72 MILLION TO SPEND. Easy to monitor as it is only per season done once. I post the cap each team has and he must have 200 million minus that number to spend all season.

could have keeper option

Postby Rjnewman » Thu Aug 20, 2009 5:53 pm

Where inverse point totals define how many can be kept. For example 1st one second one 3-6 two 4-9 three 10-12 four, and anybody can keep any amount less or none at all.

I like the keeper option as outlined by rj. also the opt-in for prizes and the bottom 6 concept.
