now I rea;ize I was wrong about the first pick. The O's, all by themslelves are better than my combined team.

The Orioles, for better or worse are the only team that can field a decent or great player at every position and substantial scrub players.
They have 4* SP and a great bullpen. This is why a single franchise league would never work, the team that has Baltimore has a huge advantage.

Try this*:
carry no SS or back up 2B and 3B and never set your lineups.
HAL may very well use one of your 1B at SS.

* not recommended

Good thing you included the *disclaimer on there Jett - or JamesGang would be suing the JettBlack empire and we'd all be excellent, well-paid expert witnesses!

Whoever had the first pick would have to take Baltimore just to be competitive, since it was almost a done deal the second franchise would be SD. Surprisingly, SD matches up pretty well with Baltimore (although most teams probably would given the talent Baltimore has). Now if only those two teams didn't play in extreme pitcher's parks.

So I go from "If ugrant pulls this one off, he'll have done a great job." to "The O's, all by themslelves are better than my combined team."

What a difference a day makes...

Just for the record, Baltimore has 3 *SP and one of them is Tom Phoebus, who I'm sure all of you would love to face. Just wanted you all to know I can whine with the best of them.

My BRIEF Historical Perspective

Postby Risden » Thu Mar 05, 2009 2:56 pm

I have been in several 1969 franchises leagues. But only two were strictly players from 2 teams only (no trades, etc.). Below are the final records and World Series results for your review:

The first league was a $100K Cap and owners had to choose one AL team and one NL team (made drafting a little different).

AL/NL - $100K CAP
EAST
Orioles/Padres 85-77
Dodgers/Red Sox 84-78 WC
Pirates/Royals 82-80
Yankees/Mets 82-80

CENTRAL
Braves/Senators 86-76
Cubs/Indians 80-82
Cardinals/W Sox 76-86
Tigers/Phillies 73-89

WEST
Astros/Athletics 90-72
Giants/Angels 82-80
Twins/Expos 77-85
Reds/Pilots 75-87

WS: Astros/Athletics over Orioles/Padres in 5 games

The second league was a $80K Cap; the Orioles were matched with the Royals to form a powerhouse regular-season team!

TWO TEAMS - $80K CAP
EAST
Orioles/Royals 96-66
Cubs/Phillies 82-80
Twins/Pilots 76-86
Cardinals/Padres 73-89

CENTRAL
Tigers/Indians 90-72
Pirates/W Sox 83-79 WC
Reds/Angels 74-88
Mets/Expos 72-90

WEST
Giants/Red Sox 88-74
Astros/Yankees 82-80
Athletics/Dodgers 82-80
Braves/Senators 74-88

WS: Pirates/W Sox over Giants/Red Sox in 7 games

Points of Interest to me:
(1) The Orioles are competitive - no matter which team they match up with.
(2) The Braves/Senators combo were division winners in the first league, but near the bottom in the second.
(3) In these 2 leagues, the 8 teams to make it to the WS were all different, depending on the league.
