Lots of learning still to be done by all in this game. I am highly impressed by the drafting skills of many of the newer faces here (yourself included). There's lots of formulas to win and even more ways to lose in this game. There are far greater minds than mine in this league.

Any team starting with a rotation of Phil Niekro, Claude Osteen, Gaylord perry and Kenny Holtzman is off to a good start.

Luckily, you picked up that young fella named Bench to catch the two knuckleballers (Phil & Hoyt). :D

I suppose that .083 hitter is Woodie Held, darling of the '69 drafts.
I have had over 30 '69 teams and have only had Held once, and was not impressed. He plays a lot of positions badly, will never hit over .220 but he will hit 30+ dingers. It doesn't thrill me but Risden has had 40 teams and won 6 flags, so he must know what he's doing.

Oh, and Risden is not retired! Sorry, Bob, don't mean to tread on your growing legend!

And I might add that he lost a seventh game to Franky35 last night in another league we were in that would have brought his 7th '69 flag! Instead Franky gets his 658th  Suffice it to say I was eliminated LONG AGO in that league :? .

Timing to the finish line

Postby GFDWARF07 » Tue Feb 17, 2009 8:51 am

Well for awhile it looked like we might actually come in under our deadline, but things have really slowed now. I am still hopeful we can make some hay today and tomorrow and finish up Wed evening. I have to leave at about 10am Thursday moring, so would need to get the draft finished before I go. If not I will send my proxies to Risden by blackberry and we will keep rolling. Then Risden will set up the league and issue passwords, east to west, so we can enter at the appropriate time. I would be able to enter my team Sunday night.

Thanks all - its been a fun and interesting draft so far! And remember championships are won in lost sometimes in rounds 14-20! :)

Risden mystery picks

I knew about held. It was Hicks that was the scary .083 hitter....

Sneeze is the only one I have right now - I will be out for a meeting between 1pm and 3:30pm Central FYI.

We are crawling right now.

In the series we just finished up, Bob had Hicks and Robinson on the same team. The series was amazing with 5 games decided in the final inning. After I lost the first two games, I conceded because I had nothing but left-handed starters left. In the next 3 games against lefties Hicks went 4 for 11 with 4 HRs, 11 RBIs, 4 walks and 7 runs scored; Robinson went 7 for 13 with 3 HRs, 1 double.

"Crawling" would imply some movement.
