Gee, I played ATG1 exactly once - and I can't even see that league any more. You remember that? While reading the above post only one thought came to mind, "anal retentive"... :D

Help for the guys with weaker teams

Postby duke1066 » Fri Feb 08, 2008 10:50 am

This is a very interesting league. I agree with the guy that took the White Sox that he is in for a long season. Let's face it. He is not going to win.

I suggest the following:

For any manager that selects a team that had a losing record in 1969 they can pick up a maximum of 2 free agents. This would make them more competitve. Think about it. What if the Royals had Carew at 2B or the White Sox had Boog Powell? How much better would they have been.

Here are the suggested qualifications, if you are to pick up a player worth more than .5 Mil

1. Your team must have had a losing record in 1969.
2. You must have the salary cap room.
3. You can only pick up 1 pitcher and 1 hitter.
4. you can only pick a player off of an available team.
5. You can NOT release a player that has a value over .75 Mil to make room for a free agent.

Please realize that I do not qualify for free agents. This is not for the teams that have good players, but to encourage people to try teams that have losing records like the White Sox, Phillies, Royals, etc. I still do not think that they will win their divisions, but it will at least keep things interesting.

Thanks for listening.......

Thanks for the support, Duke. I chose ChW for the challenge and intend to make it interesting. I think I have a decent shot at success and playing in Central will help. Those teams have their own issues to contend with.

Ever the 'bulldog' teams will have problems, not the least of which is that they all play against each other in the same div. I don't envy the West for having to deal w/ugrant now-- the guy is usually found hanging out with or close to the div lead.

I think the ChiSox have an interesting balance that makes them viable in this league, if used correctly. I do think what you're saying about some of the other teams might apply. Cal has absolutely no hitting. Seattle might work, but a definite challenge. Same for KC. If Foy and Kelly steal 100 each, which they might cuz I'm sure the KC GM would set stealing to 'super-mega-aggressive', they might get it. Teams like Philly that are legally under the cap would require additions, but one ought to be careful about how much. Part of the deal in this league is to play with what you have, to "play it from the rough."

The problem for the teams over 60 mil is that they have a lot of redundancy at positions. If they only have limited ability to change this, and I hope they would for the sake of the sub 60mil teams, I think it has an equalizing effect for the sub 60 mil teams. If you're carrying a backup catcher of 2.5 mil in a no-DH league and neither is a platoon, your effective cap is really 57.5 mil, not 60, etc etc.

To summarize, I think the ChiSox, as much as they might appreciate it, won't need the supplement. At least that is my intent to prove. We'll see if I'm right.

Why are we still talking about rule changes when the league is almost all entered into the league and everyone signed up for the league knowing the rules?

We should not be making rule changes at this point.

I dunno, AP, I love Northrup and McAuliffe, but there are some seriously big sticks in that div. Wait until Reggie, Howard and Petro lay into those 4th and 5th starters...

hansweb9 hasn't loaded yet. He's in a league with me, I have messaged him there and PM'd him. Hopefully we can draft tonight and start Monday. I am sending the password to the West, unless someone strongly objects, I suggest they start loading. It will alter the fidelity of the divisions, if that bothers anyone, post away.
