Re: So....

Postby Risden » Thu Mar 24, 2011 7:08 pm

[quote:8165190e3e="caimrisek"]Franky...(just using McCovey and hence, your name as an example-NOTHING PERSONAL!) if we were to agree on a trade of:

you sending me McCovey

for

me sending you Gibson and a pick...

Do you REALLY think that would be fair??!!??

You would be getting a $10M+pitcher with no consequence to the pre-draft cap hit...AND...you would still have a ton of money (over $30M!) to either draft another starter, replacement OF'er AND upgrade to your RP's!!! And...with the extra $10M you can now spend (pre-draft) you could, in effect, keep taking players that other teams, like SD, would draft to fill their roster.

Would this happen...probably NOT...but...with the way the rules are setup it COULD! This is what I think is not fair...and this is why I will NOT participate in pre-draft trading.

Do I think you thought of this? No. Do I think you did this on purpose to exploit the rules? No. I'm just sayin' it COULD be done. It's just a muddy middle ground here that I think the only way to stay clean is to count the money where it sits....

Sorry...the horse moved....

Anyway...I'm thankful you started this league and I can't wait for it to start...we're not gonna change the rules now so it really doesn't matter....[/quote:8165190e3e]

I have toyed with a similar idea, but it would not be in the best spirit of the game. Plus the majority of high-quality free agents are now gone.

Let's move on.

caimrisek,

Trading Gibson for Nate Oliver would be unfair and it COULD happen, but it would be a trade you'd never make. Likewise Gibson for McCovey minus 13.35 mil of cap is a trade you'd never make because you would be better off keeping Gibson and the 13.35 mil to spend on other players. Am I wrong about that? Do you want to trade me Gibson for McCovey and take the 13.35 cap hit? It would seem to be a trade that is clearly bad for the Cards.

To convince me there could be a problem, you need to think of a trade that would benefit both teams and yet be unfair.

Unfair Trades

Postby evanthomas » Thu Mar 24, 2011 8:04 pm

If there was a provision to overthrow trades that someone thinks are bad, then Lou Brock would never have retired from the Cardinals and the Rangers wouldn't still be bemoaning sending Gonzales and Young to the seashore for a one year wonder Japanese reliever. Baseball has a long and somewhat colorful history of bad trades, just recall the Yankees and their Kansas City "farmclub" and such infamous deals as the Babe to New York to finance a Broadway show. Other than Charlie Finley's fire sale of the A's, (I remember that because I was sitting in the stands in Arlington and saw them post the deals on the scoreboard) the commissioner has had very little involvement, and probably rightly so. No one is holding a gun to these owners and GM;s head to force the deal. Some of them probably were ecstatic that they were able to get a Bobby Shantz to pitch in their bullpen or to have Roger Moret go into a catatonic state in the locker room. Come on, the rules are there, let's just get on with it. My guys will have enough trouble finding their home ballpark without a guide, they would probably disappear forever if traded.

[quote:66852278e8="GordieHowe"][i:66852278e8]Gordie- I almost took Woody - who are you going to sit to get him AB's? Brooks, Frank, Davey Johnson, Buford, Belanger? Or maybe can Blair and let him play CF? [/i:66852278e8]

Gfdwarf - Added value at that price and on my limited budget, plus now no one else can use him against me. I expect he'll play in homer ball parks against righties at 3B, pinch hit a lot and be an injury replacement for almost any position. Not bad for under $2mm.[/quote:66852278e8]

Don't get me wrong, Bruce, I like the pick! Just pointing out how loaded you are to start with!

Pardon the interruption, but Adrian has the draft functionality up for the '69 set on Diamond Dope now. We need three more to fill and we can start up the first DD '69 draft. Please sign up!
