Good God....just got home from work, saw nearly all my proxies gone....put in some more, but Curt, Al, whoever else has my cell number....feel free to call me if it gets to me and a logjam starts.....

Big blizzard in the NYC area tonight/tomorrow; battening down the hatches right now, Xmas tree shopping in a bit....

Kind of a drag that they don't show closer ratings on the main roster page; gotta open up the card to see if there's a closer rating. Boo!!!

[quote:e739cfea7e]Roy White is singularly responsible for making me a baseball fan. My grandfather was watching a game in the late 60s or early 70s, when I had no interest yet in baseball. He had a game on, and I saw Roy White make this incredible catch, going into the stands to steal a HR away. It was mind-blowingly exciting for me, and I started to pay attention.

I had a moment like this when Tommie Agee hit a grand slam against the Chicago Cubs in 1971, when my father was watching the game and I had no interest in baseball. (In looking it up, I realize it happened April 24, 1971; didn't know the Mets actually lost the game.) My conversion would have pleased my dad more if I'd rooted for the Yankees; he'd only had the Mets on because the Yanks weren't airing that day.

Closer Ratings

Postby TomSiebert » Mon Dec 05, 2005 10:26 pm

Albert2B, I humbly assert you're wrong. Perhaps I'm shooting myself in the foot by sharing this insight -- my division is looking tough, Tough, TOUGH, but 1969 relief pitchers DO have closer ratings.

Call up Ron Perranoski. Look on the high right hand side of his virtual card. See the 6@ ? What does that mean to you? Call up Mike Kilkenny, with his two saves in real life. He has 0@. Now try Ken Tatum and his 22 saves. He's got a 5@ in the corner. Do you now agree?

You may be right, although neither the rules nor the "how to read the card" gives any reference to it.

But here's the thing: if there's no rule stating you need a pitcher with a closer rating, and his endurance isn't affected, what difference does it make?

Tom, you are correct that the 6 on Perranoski's card may be a closer rating SOM put on the card (to be honest, I never bothered to check)....but the closer rule is NOT incorporated in the 1969 game.

Ever try to sort free agents by closers (on both TSN's and penn's site)? You can't do it. That's because there's no such thing as a "closer" in this game. A reliever gets tired according to the endurance rating and that's it. The numbers you pointed out as closer ratings are meaningless.

Having said that, I've always thought that they didn't create the closer rule until the 90's when closers like Eckersley became so specialized that they had to make a special rule for them. Even the 80's game doesn't incorporate the closer rule. But since you have pointed out that there are actually guys like Perranoski, Tatum, etc. who seemingly have closer ratings, I have to wonder why they are even on the card if TSN doesn't use them :? :?:

Please let me drop Mack Jones

Postby TomSiebert » Tue Dec 06, 2005 9:35 am

I've put in Mack Jones for a drop....he was still lingering around as a low-level proxy and a bunch of other guys I wanted got picked....didn't even mean to have him there anymore....I put in for a drop (looks like 007 put in to drop Reg-gie, too). I know a couple people dropped players already, so I'm hoping this is cool...please let me know.

I tried to approve it....but I don't think the Reggie drop went through. I think Mack Jones is dropped, though.

Guys, as the commish of this here league I rule w/ an iron fist :o

[b:a7a5b4d230]PLAYER DROPS [/b:a7a5b4d230] - I don't have time to police everyone and I trust everyone is playing fairly. Mistakes happen w/ proxies - yes, and they should be corrected but I will NOT allow drops several rounds after the fact when people are able to see the errors in their ways.

The AP RULE is in effect from round 1. NO DROPS if you make make 2 add'l picks after the 1 you want to drop. That basicly 1 full turn round the horn and more than enough time to see you made a boo boo.

You don't like that rule, go join PJMB and the rest of thw whiners. If Brad think's he's dropping Reggie he's got another thing coming....and he's my buddy too.

From here on in, I will approve any/all drops - shoot me an e-mail to apisano22@verizon.net AND anthony@pacosport.com

ps....brad and tws have commish privaliges on penn's site too to make any fixes (if they know how).

Cool ? Fair ? Let's play ball.

By the way, though I am dead serious, I type this w/ a smile on my face knowing everyone "SHOULD BE" cool with this.

If you are upset, shoot me an e-mail to discuss calmly.......very hard to read tone on a message board.
