The 1986: Take Two All Star Game, the 57th “Mid-Summer Classic”, lived up to its dramatic billing, as the National League All Stars staged an exciting comeback, eventually emerging victoriously in 11 innings over the American League All Stars by a final score of 6-3.

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Mike Schmidt delivered a two out single in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game, and later hit a two out walk off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to win the game for the National League All Stars. Schmidt’s clutch hitting and late game heroics earned him All Star Game MVP honors.

Bottom of 7th... trailing 3-0, the N.L. All Stars loaded the bases with no outs against Oakland’s Curt Young and were able to pull within one run by scoring on a fielder’s choice & a sacrifice fly, both off Yankees reliever Dave Righetti.

Bottom of 9th... still trailing by a run, the N.L. All Stars quickly got runners on 2nd & 3rd with no outs against KC's Dan Quisenberry. Ozzie Smith then tried to tie it with a suicide squeeze, but Tony Gwynn was thrown out at home. Toronto’s Mark Eichhorn relieved Quisenberry, and with two outs Schmidt tied the game with an RBI single that also sent Ozzie Smith to third base. On the first pitch to the next batter, Ozzie attempted to steal home, but was tagged out on a close play, and the game proceeded to extra innings.

Bottom of 11th... with runners on 1st & 2nd and one out and no hitters left on the bench, the N.L. All Stars were forced to let a pitcher bat (SF’s Mark Davis). Though Davis hit a possible inning-ending grounder, he raced down the line, diving into 1st base just ahead of the throw to avoid a double play. That play extended the inning for Schmidt's towering, game-ending walk off home run.

That's why they call this the "Mid-Summer Classic".
