Cal started the night off with a bang in the first inning, by chunking his first fielding chance of the evening in the top of the first. Royals position players had quite a fun time fielding after that, as apparently the equipment manager forgot to pack their gloves. The Royals committed 4 errors on the evening. Members of the [b:bc0092591e]"nice throw, way to go"[/b:bc0092591e] club were Darryl Motley with a nice overthrow in the 2nd inning, George Brett with a worm burner to 1B in the 5th, Steve "bam-bam" Balboni kicked a grounder in the 8th, and finally Buddy Biancalana's 9th inning blunder lead to 3 unearned runs. By the way, Mike Flanagan tossed a complete game shutout.
[b:bc0092591e]In other goofy action:[/b:bc0092591e] The New York Mets failed to take sole possession of first place, as the Reds stunned the Mets, 5-4. The fun really started in the bottom of the ninth on a Nick Esasky single to center. Mets reliever Roger McDowell continued his audition for ESPN's celebrity softball tryouts by sending a wild pitch to the screen against pinch hitter Eddie Milner. Seizing the opportunity to tie the game, Max Venable was brought in to pinch run. Milner proceeded to single to right and Venable was held at third with nobody out. Bo Diaz singled home Venable for the tying run. Then rookie SS Barry Larkin popped up. Fans then went home happy as Eric Davis drove in the game winner on a single to center. After the game, Roger McDowell was said to be considering wearing a kilt on the moung for better luck. By the way, Rob Murphy amazingly improved his record to 12-1 on the year in relief for the Reds.
[b:bc0092591e]Best non-performance of the night[/b:bc0092591e] goes to Mark Clear of the Brewers who came in to relieve in the bottom of the ninth, threw one pitch to the back-stop and ended the game as the Angels beat the Brewers, 6-5.
