Gibson's first three home runs were solo shots off Kansas City starting pitcher Dennis Leonard. His fourth home run came off reliever Bud Black, which capped an 8 run inning for Detroit that emphatically put the game out of reach.

All 4 of Gibson's HR's were "ballpark effect", which were 1-14 (out of 20) for Tiger Stadium. Gibson came close to a record setting 5th HR, but a 5th inning drive barely missed clearing the center field wall- Gibson ended up with a triple.
