With two outs in the 8th inning, Trammel fielded an easy grounder from Boston's slow-footed DH Don Baylor, but threw wildly past first base for an error that extended the inning.

Steve Lyons then delivered a 2 run single that scored the eventual winning runs, turning that costly error into another costly Detroit loss.

Lyons had entered the game as a replacement for first baseman Bill Buckner who was injured batting in the 6th inning.

Boston has now won 9 of their last 12 games, including three straight against Detroit. The Red Sox have slowly but surely moved into contention in the A.L. East division race. Boston is just 7 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays.

In Other Playoff Races... In the National Leage, the Mets and Cardinals are tied again for the East division lead after [u:4476b39f91]New York defeated the Expos 7-5[/u:4476b39f91] and [u:4476b39f91]St. Louis lost to Pittsburgh 6-2[/u:4476b39f91]. Meanwhile in the NL West, the Astros [u:4476b39f91]outlasted the Padres 7-6[/u:4476b39f91] in 13 innings to move to within 3 games of the lead.

In the American League West, the [u:4476b39f91]Angels defeated Seattle 3-1[/u:4476b39f91], but the A's gained ground after sweeping a doubleheader from the Minnesota Twins.
