The game's true home run hero was Milt Thompson whose 3 run homer in the top of the 8th off Lee Smith was the difference maker.

The Phillies are now only 5 back as both the Mets and Cardinals lost.

[b:39b66e5699]Over in the AL EAST...[/b:39b66e5699] Those Damn Yankees won their 5th straight game as New York shut out Toronto, 2-0. The lone scoring in the game came at the hand of Don Mattingly as his 2 run homer gave the victory to Tommy John. The win was John's 14th on the year. Taking the hit on the losing end was another John, John Cerutti.

The Yankees are only 1 back of the division leading Tigers, while the Jays have now dropped to 4 games back.

[b:39b66e5699]In the NL WEST...[/b:39b66e5699] If the Reds and Giants were thinking of making a run at the division, they did a poor job last night as Astros closed down the Reds, 6-1 and the Padres rolled over the Giants, 13-5 keeping both teams back by double digits.
