Guidry (13-8) allowed just four hits (all singles) and one walk, striking out 11 Detroit hitters.

MVP Candidate Don Mattingly broke open a 1-1 tie game with a 2 run single in the fifth inning. The Yankees would go on to score 6 more runs, but Mattingly's clutch RBI's were the difference.

Mattingly now has 143 RBI's on the season... 20 more than any other player (in either league).

The New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals are once again tied for first place in the NL East. Rick Horton tossed a 3 hitter to lead St. Louis to a [u:e8f8778430]4-0 victory over the Montreal Expos[/u:e8f8778430]. Meanwhile, the New York Mets overcame 2 home runs by Von Hayes to [u:e8f8778430]defeat the Phillies 6-5[/u:e8f8778430].

[b:e8f8778430]NL WEST UPDATE...[/b:e8f8778430] The San Diego Padres [u:e8f8778430]defeated the Astros 6-3[/u:e8f8778430], sending Mike Scott to his 10th loss on the season... moving within 3 games of Houston for the division lead. Each team has 13 games remaining on the schedule.

[b:e8f8778430]ELIMINATION TALLY...[/b:e8f8778430] After Sunday night's games, the list of teams mathematically eliminated from "1986: Take 2" playoff contention include... six American League teams (Cleveland Indians, Milwaukee Brewers, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins, Seattle Mariners) and just two teams from the National League (Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves).
