<img src="http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/images/baseball/stratomatic/1986/story_photos/alan_trammell_3_150x201.jpg" align="left" border="1" width="150" height="201" style="margin-right: 10px;" /> The Tigers and Yankees have been doing their cheek-to-cheek pennant race dance for practically the entire season, and as long as Detroit's shortstop Alan Trammell continues to hit like he's hitting, the division will probably stay impossibly close all the way down to the wire. Trammell scorched a 3-run blast to help beat the Yanks on Saturday night, the 2nd game of this crucial 3-game series at Yankee Stadium. Detroit now trails New York by .5 game and can regain the division lead with a win on Sunday.

[b:7cb219bc3c]In the NL East:[/b:7cb219bc3c] The St. Louis Cardinals edged the Cubs, 2-1, pushing their slim 1st place lead over the Mets to 2 games. The Mets received another lackluster performance by young Dwight Gooden (12-11), as they fell to Rick Rhoden and the Pirates, 5-4.

[b:7cb219bc3c]In the NL West:[/b:7cb219bc3c] The Padres lost a vital game to the Reds, 6-4, falling to a precarious 3 games behind the Astros for 1st place in the West. San Diego put the tying runs on with 1 out in the 8th, but Garry Templeton bounced into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat and the Padres' last hope for a comeback. The Astros, meanwhile, took care of business against the 53-102 Braves, inching ever closer to the division title.
