OK this is my first ever paid team. 86 season/ 80 Mil./DH/Waivers On

Let me know what you think of the team Any advice??

My thoughts:

Bad news is I'm a Kingdome team in a division with the other parks being Yankees/Olympic/Astrodome

- I am planning to platoon Sid Bream/Steve Garvey (Bream becomes DH against LH)
- Backman/Garcia platoon at 2B
- Hatcher/Manning platoon in CF
- Leach DH against RH

I put a lot of money in to my Bullpen. I am hoping to shut dow games after inning 6 with Schiraldi as set up for Murphy. This is an expierement.

I love DeLeon and Guidry for value, both are doing great in my other league, DeLeon in hunt for Cy Young

Take poll at bottom, and reply with your forecast for record and finish. I will update throughout the season to see who is the best prognosticator

I predict playoff bound for my team. The plan is to go 54-27 at home park and be .500 on the road for a 95-67 record over all, winning my division and headed to the playoffs.

Thats my rookie prediction

1) Your Pitching : isn't spectacular on either end , SP or RP . You have one bonified stud on boths ends ( Scott & Murphy ) the rest are ok at best and at Kingdome you better pray they do their job everytime out or they will get smoked.

2) Your Hitting : Every single guy you have on your offense is a 15 game injury guy . If you lose 2-3 of your starters at once , your hurting massively . Now you do have so decent hitters , don't get me wrong but injuries may/will play pavoc on this team I believe .

3) I think your overrating your team and I think ( just me that is ) that a .500 team is what I see . You may be better but not 17 games better in my opinion .

Thanks for some good analysis FR. I didn't really pay attention to the injury thing, that is a great point. I will have to see about adjusting or trading some. Thanks a lot

Looks like you've made some changes since your original message. Right now it looks as if you've got Bream full-time DH.

Lots of BPHRs on the pitching staff for the Kingdome - Guidry, especially.

It would be nice to have more pop at catcher and 2B.

Thanks Al for the input. Yup no doubt my pitchers are probably going to give up a few runs in the Kingdome. I have Guidry, Tewksbury and DeLeon in my other league. Getting great seasons out of them. DeLeon is almost unhittable, walks a lot but doesnt give uyp runs or hits. Guidry doesnt walk anybody and keeps my team in the game, which is all I need for this team. Tewks is great pitching against a team that can load up LH against him.

I have a lot of SP on my team and will play match ups other than Scott and DeLeon which will start every chance they get. Once I get to the 8th inning its over with Murphy closing.

Of course on an 80 Mil team it is impossible to be awesome at every aspect of the game. I built a team that resembles a "murders row" lineup. I am going to score runs, no doubt about it. I have a lineup including Brooks, Dawson, Strawberry, Larry Parrish, Cory Snyder with I think pretty good supporting players. Good platoons at 1B at 2B and some production out of catcher. CF is a bit weak but adds speed to my lineup.

I have Strawberry now as my DH with Dawson in right as a better defensive player. Bream is now 1/2 platoon his part against RH, Garvey
against LH.

I am truly concerned about Free Radicals point of injuries. I didnt pay much attention to that. Could be my achilles heel.

This should be fun, looks like i have a lot to prove. I am surprised a lot of people felt it was only a .500 team. I think its a playoff bound team at 95 wins. Season starts tonight!!!

This is great fun, Play Ball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the great thing about SOM is: All of this is great in theory. If you get the rolls, this could be a very good team, with a "murderer's row-esque" lineup and good pitching. I personally would try to get a couple of players that are bullet proof or close to that. Just because you have some of these players on other teams, doesn't mean they will be good on this team. Hopefully, the Kingdome doesn't turn into the MASH 4077 for you. You will get hurt, more often than you think you will. I think that's why most people have picked .500 or below. The possibility of injuries is huge. Godspeed.

Four reasons I see you struggling to make the playoffs with the team as it is:
1. Too many BP HRs from your SP.
2. Your infield defense is going to create many more scoring opportunities for the opponent.
3. Injuries.
4. Bullpen. Yes, Murphy is a stud, but you will still need guys to pitch in the 6th and 7th innings, and when Murphy is fatigued and HAL rests him. You may be in a DH league, which usually allows SP to pitch more, but with only one SP rated past the 7th inning, I bet HAL pulls SP at their POW often enough to see a bad win pct from the middle relievers.

Good luck.

Pal, thanks for the time to analyze. I agree with all 4 points. Definately things to watch.

I am not terribly worried about my SP BP HR's, When teams come to my park my lineup will easily out slug them, when I go to theirs, problem solved, all 3 are in pitchers parks.

You are definately correct here. Hubie commited 2 errors and so did Parrish in first series. Scott pitched great only allowing 1 ER but 3 runs due to 3 errors. Cost him the game. So this is a great observation. Hubie's offense is great though. My plan is to see how it goes. If it is a real problem I will release Strawberry and use his money to buy Fernandez who is still available. Move Brooks to DH.

Injuries, yes agreed here. An oversight on my part when drafting. Rookie mistake there, Free Radical made same point. I will have to just see how it goes. I can handle any one guy going down for 15 games if it is just him, but Multiple injuries will cause problems.

Bullpen, Murphy is the horse, I will trust those guys I have for an Inning or 2 of work. They will give up some runs but my team can score them in bunches so I think I can absorb some late inning runs.

Overall, an 80 mil. team is very hard to get perfect. Every team is going to have weak spots. By the way, here is the report from the first series, 2-1 in home series, 6 HR, .307 BA. .667 is what I project for my home games so hopefully the first series is a sign of things to come! Next series, I head out on the road against 3 RH SP. This will be a tell tale series.

Well quick update after the first test on the road in a pitchers park (Astrodome) against 3 RH pitchers (Forsch - Sutton - Clemens)

Pleased to say the Bunnies club the Cubbies to sweep the series and run our record to 5-1 out of the gate!

Outscored them 19-7, with 5 more HR's and keeping the team BA over .300 and maintaining a team ERA under 2.00.

Next series I stay on the road at Olympic Stadium, another pitchers park, before heading home for 6 straight. .........
