Roberto Clemente At Second Base??

Unfortunately, since both of the second basemen on my rosters were injured, HAL was forced to play someone out of position at second base. However, why did he have to take a "1" rated right fielder with a cannon of a throwing arm and insert him at second base??!!

As it turned out, Clemente committed an error in the bottom of the ninth inning which contributed to the eventual loss by my team. I realize that it probably wouldn't have mattered who was playing 2B, as anyone would have been rated a 5, and the result of the game would likely have been the same. It just seems that if the substitute is going to be rated a 5, HAL could have just as easily inserted Dave Marshall at 2B rather than move Clemente from RF to 2B and then put Marshall in RF. HAL's substitution ended up downgrading both the RF and 2B positions.

Hey Ken, I thought that HAL wouldn't allow the last player who plays a position to be injured. I wonder how that happened. How about the next game? Was one of your fielders ready to return?

I've heard that a team's only available catcher isn't allowed to be injured, but that's the only position that I've heard about.

My team has three players who play 2B, Joe Morgan, Dick Schofield and Ted Kubiak. The latter two are also the only ones who play shortstop on my team. Morgan and Schofield were injured at the beginning of the game, so Ed Stroud, outfielder extraordinaire, started the game at 2B while Kubiak played SS. During the game, Stroud get injured (there must be a minefield somewhere out there around 2B), and Coco Laboy comes in to substitute for him. Then, HAL pinch hits for my only remaining shortstop (Kubiak) in the top of the ninth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Coco Laboy moves to SS (a "5" fielder?), and Clemente moves to 2B (a "5" fielder, for sure). A superb infield up the middle, to be sure.

It would seem that HAL should be programmed so that the only remaining player at a position cannot be removed from a game for a pinch hitter. It happened with Kubiak in this game, and I've had it happen with other teams, such as Sal Bando being inserted as catcher on one of my previous 70s teams (he actually ended up throwing out two of three runners attempting to steal on him).

I like the crazy subs at the end of the game. It reminds me of the Baltimore-Toronto game where the O's manager (either Weaver or Altobelli, I can't remember) pinch hit for the last catcher and utility infielder Len Sakata came in to catch. The Blue Jays were so intent on stealing that 3 Blue Jays were picked off ! The O's won it in extra innings and went on to win the division.

It was said that, because of his stature, Sakata would not even have to squat. I remember that.

One of the most intriguing managerial moves I ever saw in a game happened during the 1987 NLCS. I don't remember which game it was, but Todd Worrell had been pitching for the Cardinals, and Whitey Herzog brought in Ken Dayley to pitch, but instead of pulling Worrell from the game, Herzog inserted him in RF. Apparently Herzog had been giving some consideration to bringing Worrell back in to pitch, but as it turned out, Dayley retired both batters that he faced, and Worrell finished that particular game as the right fielder.

8-)

my favorite story on substitutions happened with the 86 Mets. There was a game in Cincy during the middle of the season. Davey Johnson put McDowell into right field while Orosco was on the mound and they ALTERNATED pitching and playing right field (lefty/righty match-ups). Don't think I ever saw that before or since.
