Lineup Help- Need a Leadoff man

Postby TonyMontana1638 » Fri Mar 10, 2006 1:03 pm

Hello all, first time on the boards and I just had a quick question:
I just started my first 1969 team, did the draft and now need some help with my lineup. I have Luis Apparicio, Cesar tovar and Horace Clark: all competent basestealers, all hit for a (relatively) high average. Aparicio has the best OBP but is the worst base stealer of the three (if I recall, im not looking at the team right now). Who do you guys think would be the best leadoff man and where should I stick the other two? Keep in mind I also have richie hebner who has the best average and obp (by far) of anyone on the team but hank aaron: I was thinking of putting him in the two spot. Playing at Comiskey park if it helps. Anyways thanks for any help in advance.

Post a link to your squad.

Go to the statistics page. Click on your team, on the left.
Highlight the URL (web address) on top, right click to copy it.

Paste it here.

You may want to have different 1-2 men vs. LHPs and RHPs. I'd go with Aparicio-Clarke against LHPs--two very good OBP guys back to back with good speed. Clarke bats second because he grounds into slightly fewer DPs and has higher BA--better chance of driving leadoff man home.

More thought required against RHPs. I'd lean toward Aparicio-Hebner. Hebner has better OBP, but fewer DPs. Like Clarke, Hebner has high BA, better chance of driving Aparicio home. Aparicio is not the ideal leadoff man against righties, but he should do OK.

Good luck, and welcome to the boards!

Any of the 3 can leadoff against lefties but only Aparicio has a decent OBP vs Righties. Clarke has enough pop that he can hit #3 against lefties if needed.

Here's a link to my team.

Also would like to mention the waiver's just finished and I also added paul blair to my team if that changes anything.

Thanks so much for the answer's thus far! :D

Link doesn't work.

Go to the statistics page. Click on your team, on the left.
Highlight the URL (web address) on top, right click to copy it.

Paste it here.

The URL must end with the team ID number. If you see numbers at the end of the URL you know you did it correctly.

Really? Sorry 'bout that, I tested it and it worked for me but here it is with your method:

And for the record any other advice on my team is well-appreciated: I'm no strat expert and this '69 is kind of overwhelming, a far cry from 2005. Thanks again. :D

You could also try Hebner - Aparicio, with Aparicio set to "bunt more" when facing at least two righties.

I'd probably start with it the other way around and watch the game summaries for how they work together for at least 10 games.

Thanks for the help again thus far guys, this team is a far cry from what I'm used to: lots of "small-ball" guys who field well and steal. I'm having a particularly hard time placing paul blair now, who proabbly has the most pop on the team behind aaron but not a fabulous OBP. I was thinking of him in the three spot but...Anyway here are the lineups thus far:

LHP
1. Aparicio, Luis (R) SS
2. Clarke, Horace (S) 2B
3. Hebner, Richie (L) 3B
4. Aaron, Hank (R) RF
5. Blair, Paul (R) CF
6. Cash, Norm (L) 1B
7. Cannizzaro, Chris (R) C
8. Tovar, Cesar (R) LF
9. Pitcher P

RHP
1. Aparicio, Luis (R) SS
2. Hebner, Richie (L) 3B
3. Clarke, Horace (S) 2B
4. Aaron, Hank (R) RF
5. Cash, Norm (L) 1B
6. Blair, Paul (R) CF
7. Cannizzaro, Chris (R) C
8. Tovar, Cesar (R) LF
9. Pitcher P

If I were to build a lineup with these players, it would look something like this:

LHP
1. Aparicio
2. Tovar (change from my previous post--Clarke's pop against lefties makes him more suitable for middle of the order)
3. Aaron
4. Blair
5. Clarke
6. Hebner
7. Cannizzaro
8. Cash

RHP
1. Aparicio
2. Hebner
3. Aaron
4. Cash
5. Blair
6. Tovar
7. Clarke
8. Cannizzaro

I'd bat Aaron 3rd, to take max advantage of his high OBP and high slug pct. Blair was a real stud in 1969--definitely belongs in the middle of the lineup, IMO. :)

This puts some negative clutch guys at the 5 spot, something to avoid if possible, but I don't see any power hitters with good clutch on your club. Shouldn't be a real big deal, but something to monitor and make adjustments if necessary.

Something you may want to consider is picking up a 1B who hits lefties to platoon with Cash.

Just my two cents--there are as many opinions on lineups as there are managers! :)
