'The Naturals' Season IX - congratulations cristano!

Postby ArrylT » Fri Jul 20, 2007 9:49 am

Well getting swept last night (something that happened regulary when I played dr. x) means I have a decent shot at finishing with the #1 pick ... will need to lose more games than the Monacos though, because their RS/RA differential is worse than mine.

Could not use H2H, even if I wanted to, since we went 6-6. ;)

Still the only playoff spot clinched is the Central Divison. The WC looks to be coming from either the East or Central, but if dr.x finishes in a tie with either cristano or spicki, he will advance, but if it is a 3-way tie he won't.

bigmahon could still clinch the West, if I somehow sweep rosenthm, and he sweeps dr.x.

Playoffs start tonight - good luck to cpl5454, cristano, goffchile & rosenthm.

I will not be posting Team Awards because I never do so for teams that fail to win 70+ games. In any case, since I've made so many changes, there are very few players left who've accumulated a full seasons worth of statistics.

I will try to post post-season analysis during the next couple of days - hopefully by the end of the weekend at latest. Congratulations to cristano & goffchile on making the Finals.

I wish I was in the finals--unfortunately my hot second half didn't translate into the ability to win at home in the playoffs and cristano unceremoniously dispensed with my Blues. However, cpl's Blues are in the finals. Best of luck to both squads, although it looks like cristano's Blues crushing juggernaut has the upper hand.

[b:d419319978]AT Press: [i:d419319978]'The Naturals' Semi-Finals - cristano 09 vs. New Minglewood Blues[/i:d419319978][/b:d419319978]

Game I was billed as a pitchers duel between Aces, Joss & Camnitz. However both pitched like they were auditioning a remake of the '19 Black Sox

Camnitz gave up a HR to the first batter he faced - McGwire. Reports that McGwire had been hanging around Bonds prior to the game were later found to be unsubstantiated. Then O'Doul & Schmidt got consecutive hits, all before Camnitz had gotten an out in the 1st inning. The next thing you know, a 3 run bomb was hit ... just not by Ernie Banks, but rather Larry Doby.

The Blues would rally right back, with back to back walks. With 1 out, Jackson loaded the bases with a bloop single, and Cooper smashed a double to score 2 runs and Carter sacrificed Jackson home for a 3rd.

Camnitz survived the 2nd inning, but not the 3rd, as after another 3 consecutive hits, including a key 3 run blast by Ernie Banks - who must have regretted missing the opportunity in the 1st - Camnitz got taken out for Ralph Works. Works was not much better - allowing another couple of runs before closing the 3rd.

Meanwhile Joss was not doing much better, allowing a pair of runs in the 2nd, and giving up a solo shot to Cooper in the 3rd. After three innings it was cristano 9 Blues 6.

However the middle of the game was quite quiet, as each side laid goose eggs through the 4th to 6th Innings. Joss remained in the game, which likely proved key for cristanos squad, as the overtired Works allowed another 2 runs in the 7th, ultimately putting the game out of the reach of New Minglewood, despite a brief rally in the 9th.

cristano 11 Blues 7

Game II was a much quieter affair, offensively. Neither squad managed a run at first, and it looked like Rhoads & Koufax would duel all night long. But then a single by O'Doul in the 4th opened the floodgates. Schmidt drew a walk, and one out later Banks hit his 2nd 3 run blast of the series.

This would be all the scoring cristano would need as Koufax proved to be a better ace than Joss and continued his mastery all game long, finishing with just 3 hits allowed in a Complete Game Shutout. Rhoads also pitched the whole game, giving the Blues pen a bit of a rest, but allowed another run in the 9th. After 2 games it was Ernie Banks 6 RBI, Blues 7 RBI.

cristano 4 Blues 0

The Blues were desperate going into Game III. They knew they had to win to stay alive. And for the 2nd game in 3, both teams scored in the opening frame. The Blues tallied 2 runs, while the cristano squad answered back with 1. The Blues got theirs from a 2 run HR by Mays, while Schmidts solo shot started the scoring for cristano.

The Blues would pad their lead in the 2nd, and would in fact never trail in Game III. Mays would hit his 2nd HR of the game, a beautiful 3 run blast, that came after Concepcion had driven in a run earlier with a well placed single.

The 2 teams would trade runs in the 5th. Osinski, who had replaced Young after the Mays blast in the 2nd, walked in a run. Actually it was more like walk, error, walk, walk - run scored! Meanwhile McGwire, still haunted by the Bonds allegations, smashed a solo shot in the latter half of the 5th.

In the end, the desperate Blues managed to prevail, adding runs in the 6th & 8th innings, to keep cristano rallies at bay, winning by a 6 run margin.

The Blues remained desperate in Game IV, and fought tooth & nail. The score see-sawed throughout the game, with the Blues scoring 2, then cristano getting a couple, and so forth. But every time the Blues scored, the home team answered right back.

Finally a 3 run rally by cristano in the bottom of the 6th proved to be the Blues' undoing. It gave cristano a 7-6 lead, which they turned into a 9-6 lead in the 8th, and even a hard fought rally in the 9th by the Blues could not keep cristanos squad from clinching their spot in the Finals.

Congratulations to cristano on his championship - but knowing cristano I figure he believed he had won the title prior to the season. ;)

I'll post the rest of the post-season analysis when I can, and I suppose we can start Season X next week.

[b:28d2048c51]AT Press: [i:28d2048c51]'The Naturals' Semi-Finals - St. Louis Terriers vs. Folsum Prison Blues[/i:28d2048c51][/b:28d2048c51]

'Twas the night before playoffs and all through St. Louis not a creature was stirring, not even a dog! For it was the 9th inning and the Terriers were leading the Blues by a score of 5 to 2.

Pfiester, that fiesty Terrier Ace had kept the Blues scoring to a minimum while a 4 run outburst in the 5th had given the Terriers a 3 run lead. Pfiester got Meusel to line out to 1st base, then Averill grounded out and St. Louis held its collective breath as Pfiester faced Mickey Cochrane, for what could be the last out of the game.

1 strike! 2 strikes! Then thwack! A ball dashed towards the outfield, when out of nowhere came Dots Miller to scoop up the ball and make the throw to 1st, and the game was over!

St. Louis could breathe, for they had won, their very first [b:28d2048c51]'The Naturals'[/b:28d2048c51] playoff game!!

St. Louis 5 Folsom 2

Max Lanier pitched a great game for the Blues, to help them force a split at home against the Terrriers. Striking out 11 and keeping the Terriers off the scoreboard for 7 innings, while the Blues got an HR from Baylor and then another from Trammell, along with a sacrifice fly, to get a 3-0 lead.

Things came to a head in the top of the 8th, as 3 consecutive singles, by Cobb, Waner & Gravath would score 2 Terriers but Crawford struck out. After walking May with 2 outs in the 9th, Folsom Manager Johnny Cash went to his bullpen and Jesse Orosco would strike out Dots Miller to end the game.

Blues 3 Terriers 2

The series moved to St. Louis for the 3rd & 4th games. The Terriers took a 1-0 lead in the 1st, but the Blues rallied right back in the top of the 2nd, and took the lead for good in the 3rd. Sisler & Baylor each drew walks, and then Meusel belted a 2 run single.

Folsom made The St. Louis fans blue when they tallied another three runs in the 4th, thanks in part to a 2 run single by Mel Ott, to turn it into a 6-1 lead. Cravath gave a little hope back when he bashed a solo shot in the bottom of that frame, but apart from that, and another solo shot by Cravath in the 6th, that would be all the scoring the Terriers could earn that day. The Folsom Prison Blues, winning their 2nd game in a row, now had a 2-1 lead in the best of 5.

Folsom 8 St. Louis 3

Nolan Ryan fought hard for the Terriers, keeping the Blues scoreless for 5 solid innings, but Stafford was equally as tough for Folsom, and remained so all game long, scattering but 4 hits in 8 2/3rds innings. The Terriers were unfortunately never able to manage a serious threat, and Jesse Orosco, now a hated name in St. Louis, would come in again in the 9th to seal the deal for the Prison Blues.

Folsom was off to the World Series to face cristano!

[b:eebc4c06d2]AT Press: [i:eebc4c06d2]'The Naturals' Season IX World Series - Games I & II[/i:eebc4c06d2][/b:eebc4c06d2]

The East division was decided by 1 game. The 2 teams in that season long battle, would face off to see who would win the World Series in Season IX (since the revamp). It was Adie Joss vs. Max Lanier.

The Blues started the scoring right off, with some small ball performances. Gehringer legged out a double, then Baker advanced him with a fielders choice, and Sisler helped him score with another FC.

No one would score for the next 5 innings as both Joss & Lanier would toss up goose egg after goose egg. However that would change in the top of the 7th inning when Alex Johnson would score the first run for cristano with a solo smash. That would end the scoring in the 7th, but unfortunately for Folsom Prison, that taste would awaken the cristano bats very soon.

Maybe Lanier was tiring, and too afraid to let anyone know, because he wanted to continue his duel with Joss, but he gave up back to back walks in the top of the 8th, on 8 consecutive balls. But then he settled down to strike out 2 big bats in Yastremski & Schmidt - fanning them on 6 straight strikes.

However, Alex Johnson was due up again, and he seemed to have Lanier all figured out, as it took him but one pitch to smack a single to score Doby and give cristano the lead. This brought up the ever dangerous Banks, as proven in the Semi-Finals, and he did not disappoint his team. Working the count to his advantage, Banks demolished a pitch and it soared over the fence for a 3 run HR, giving cristano the lead.

Folsom would try to rally in both the bottom of the 8th & 9th, even loading the bases once, but cristano kept faith with his ace, and Joss did not let him down, getting out of jams in both innings and delivering cristano his 1st ever World Series game win.

cristano 4 Folsom Prison 1

Game II looked to be another pitchers duel, for the most part, with Sandy Koufax up against Pierce. Both pitchers delivered Zeros for the first 1/2 of the game. But in the bottom of the fifth Koufax allowed Porter to smack a pitch that he liked into the outfield for a a single. The Baker worked Koufax to full count, and Koufax gave him a pitch that everyone is sure he would like to have back, and suddenly the score was 2-0.

Pierce would continue his strong effort, continuing to confuse the deadly bats of cristano, and only allowed 1 hit for the whole game. Meanwhile the Blues, determined to win a game at home, worked 2 more runs in the 8th, off of a wild pitch, and then a solo blast by Baylor.

The series was tied 1 each after 2 games, and interestingly enough, no reliever had yet to enter the game, as all 4 starters pitched complete games. However with the series moving to cristanos slugger friendly Polo Grounds, no one expected that to last.

2 Pitchers entered the 1st inning of Game III. Their names, forever etched in history, were Red Ames and Cy Young. But, in what would soon be a tragic tale told to young baseball fans all over the nation, only 1 pitcher would come out alive!

Actually both pitchers would live - but only 1 would survive to see the 2nd inning. That pitcher would go on to pitch a complete game and lead his team to their 2nd win of the World Series.

The name of this intrepid young hurler whose name would forever be sung in praise by fans of his team? Why good sir (or good lady), twas the name of Cy Young. It twas Cy Young that faced the pressure and helped lead his team to the promised land. Poor Red Ames, was cursed from the get-go. Out of respect for the dead we shall not repeat what happened in that fateful inning ... but young lad or lass ... never forget that name ... for if you want to survive to be a star pitcher in the major leagues you do never want to be compared to the fateful Red Ames!

cristano 8 Blues 1

In a game that would likely break the backs of the Folsom Prison Blues Championship hopes, cristano's squad rallied from a 6-1 defict to win 10-9. The fateful inning in this game was the 5th inning. Meusel had just given the Blues a 7-2 lead, and they looked to be set to tie the Series at 2 a piece.

Unfortunately, this was also the inning that Stafford ran out of gas against the heart of cristanos order. After getting A. Johnson to ground out, Stafford walked Mark McGwire and then a single to Lefty O'Doul. Stafford was able to settle down enough to strike Schmidt out on 3 pitches. But Banks was then able to load the bases with a single of his own.

Up came Larry Doby. And one pitch later, to the roaring delight of 33 thousand fans, it was 7-6 thanks to a Grand Slam! Gordon immediately followed suite with a triple, before the Prison Blues pulled Stafford and Baldschun closed out the inning.

Larry Doby would continue his dangerous slugging ways with a 3 run HR in the bottom of the eigth, completing the cristano rally, and turning the score from 7-7 to 10-7 in favour of cristano! The Blues would try and rally on their own, but came up short in the 9th.

cristano 10 Folsom Prison 9

Game V was a great duel between cristano and Folsom Prison. One team desperately trying to regain some sort of balance in the Series, and the other squad wanting to close out the series at home.

Folsom Prison would take an early 2-0 lead, but for the 2nd consecutive game would fail to hold onto their lead, when cristano rallied in the 3rd, and then took the lead for good in the 8th. It was back to back games in which the winning runs were scored in the 8th inning.

Joss would make a strong effort to be named Playoff CY Young, winning his 3rd consecutive start in the playoffs for cristano, going 26.2 IP out of a possible 27!
