how bout records since...january 27th was when ten teams took a stud pitcher, and the BULGES dropped lemon and wera and started to create some $ to grab a pitcher, and waited and waited.... didn't finally pull the trigger until february 8th with the misbegotten perranoski/garber mistake, then on the 10th, finally decided on barney schultz, dropping milt may in the process. schultz is 1-2 with an average at best 7.41 e.r.a., and the team is 9-12 since the 8th, and 6-9 since adding schultz. so is it the barney curse, losing the good-natured lemon, or just my trademark fold after a great run through the first 130-games or so. hard to believe I led bobby by 8-games at game 96, and now trail by six with the west all but clinched!

Was it worth adding a stud pitcher?

Postby The Biomechanical Man » Mon Feb 20, 2006 8:36 pm

Did it help to cut hitting budget and add a midseason stud pitcher? You decide. Here are the pitchers who were added, listed from most expensive to least expensive. The ones who made the postseason are in [b:1c52386139]bold[/b:1c52386139]:
Alexander $12.33m
Brown $11.08m
Pfiester $11.03m
Camnitz $10.61m
Cicotte $10.53m
Clemens $10.34m
Hubbell $10.11m
Adams $9.77m
[b:1c52386139]Young $9.59m
Schultz $6.07m
Hernandez $5.31m
Walker $3.58m
[/b:1c52386139]

It wasn't too long ago that we held a one-round draft to be fair who got the higher priced pitchers.

Glenn, I'm a bit surprised that you would find this very interesting. :P

Does it not stand to reason that the teams with the smallest chance of making the postseason at the 96 game mark would have taken the highest price pitchers? The results you posted seem fairly logical and intuitive to me.

I think the results speak for themselves in my case:

Before Camitz - [b:8edeb58700].490[/b:8edeb58700]

After Camitz - [b:8edeb58700].561[/b:8edeb58700]

Hmmm, let's look at things a different way then. Combining my last two postings, here are the team success after Game 96 (list from best to worst second half).

Team, Pitcher, Wins after Game 96 draft:
Hard Ball, Walker, $3.58m, 45 wins
Venice Sun, Pfiester, $11.03m, 37 wins
Hormonal Imbalance, Camnitz, $10.61m, 37 wins
Location Nickname, Adams, $9.77m, 36 wins
Homewood Homers, Young, $9.59m, 35 wins
MUSCLE Shoals BULGES, Schultz, $6.07m, 33 wins*
AmesExpress Lexicons2, Cicotte, $10.53m, 33 wins
BoSox Bullies, Clemens, $10.34m, 33 wins
Mayberry Fifes, Hernandez, $5.31m, 31 wins
Thermal Power, Hubbell, $10.11m, 30 wins
Ultimate Computer, Brown, $11.08m, 26 wins
Irish Men, Alexander, $12.33m, 20 wins

* Picked up Schultz well after Game 96

Now it looks more random. The teams with the more expensive pick-ups sometimes did well, and sometimes didn't.
