ANDY'S 15-SEASON Franchise League--SEASON RECAPS

Loved it as usual but wonder why my Braves didn't even get a mention for their medicore 3rd place finish in the West behind the White sox and division leading Tigers. After all we did come in ahead of the LA team who got a sentence (pout, pout, pout). Seriously I love these write-ups even with the snub :P

[b:3ac8623cdb][size=18:3ac8623cdb]SEASON #15 RECAP[/size:3ac8623cdb][/b:3ac8623cdb]

Season #15 was a season of symmetry, as the final World Series of the Franchise League mirrored the very first World Series in Major League history, as the Giants and Red Sox clashed one more time.

The Eastern Division was won by the Athletics and their 3 20-game winners: Chief Bender (20-11, 3.16 ERA), Vida Blue (22-14), and Catfish Hunter (21-17). Dennis Eckersley won the Fireman of the Year Award by saving 43 A’s wins. Connie Mack boasted an all-star lineup, as Eddie Collins (.306 AVG, 111 Runs, 43 SB) and Rickey Henderson (130 Runs, 43 SB) set the table, then Jimmie Foxx (51 HR, 139 RBI, .301 AVG), Mark McGwire (73 HR, 176 RBI), Al Simmons (40 HR, 112 RBI), and Reggie Jackson (56 HR, 121 RBI) drove them home.
The Expansion Squad kept on the A’s heels all season, led by Jeff Bagwell (50 HR, 168 RBI, league-leading 137 Runs), Chuck Klein (42 HR, 125 RBI, .307 AVG), Robin Yount (37 HR,102 RBI), and George Brett (.347 AVG, 25 HR, 88 RBI), who would have won the Batting Title had he not missed 51 games due to injury. Woodie Fryman saved 35 games, and Mike Scott struck out 357 batters.
The Beltway Boys had another mildly successful season, winning 81 games behind regular staples Walter Johnson (21-19, 3.77 ERA, 333 K), George Sisler (.337 AVG), Dave Winfield (36 HR, 115 RBI), and Cal Ripken (35 HR, 103 RBI).
The Indians brought up the rear, led by moundmen Addie Joss (16-17, 3.78 ERA), Stan Coveleski (20-18), Bob Feller (20-14), and Ray Narleski (43 Saves). Lou Boudreau (.302 AVG), Earl Averill (24 HR, 106 RBI), and Albert Belle (37 HR, 95 RBI) led at the plate.

The Central featured a battle that would spill over the bounds of the regular season and into the postseason, as the Giants and Red Sox fought for the upper hand all season long. The teams were tied at 87-72 with 4 games remaining, but while the Red Sox could only muster one more win (against the Tigers on the season’s last day), while the Giants won 4 straight over the Tigers and the Dodgers, giving the Giants the Central Division crown, while the Red Sox had to settle for the Wild Card. The Giants had 4 20-game winners: the M & M & M & M Boys, Christy Mathewson (20-16, 3.70 ERA), Joe McGinnity (21-17),
Juan Marichal (20-17), and Rube Marquard (21-12, 3.86 ERA). MVP Barry Bonds (61 HR, 135 RBI, 126 Runs, .311 AVG), was assisted offensively by Willie Mays (60 HR, 128 RBI), Frankie Frisch (.315 AVG, 93 Runs, league-leading 54 SB), Willie McCovey (41 HR, 93 RBI), and Mel Ott (31 HR, 76 RBI, 104 Runs).
The Red Sox took a little while to get their offensive cogs going at the start of the season, but by mid-season, the league’s best offense was running on all cylinders. Ted Williams (42 HR, 117 RBI, .318 AVG, 128 Runs), Carl Yastrzemski (36 HR, 129 RBI), Tris Speaker (.339 AVG, 21 Hr, 136 Runs, 49 SB), Rudy York (48 HR, 124 RBI), Wade Boggs (33 HR, 106 RBI, 136 Runs, .300 AVG), Rico Petrocelli (41 HR, 124 RBI), Elston Howard (34 HR, 98 RBI) provided the pop for young Terry Francona’s Red Sox. Bill Dinneen (18-8, 3.94 ERA) was the star on the mound, assisted by Roger Clemens (20-12).
The Tigers were again led by Ty Cobb (league-leading .343 AVG, 112 Runs, 233 Hits), Hank Greenberg (44 HR, 132 RBI, .304 AVG), Norm Cash (37 HR, 107 RBI), Al Kaline (33 HR, 126 RBI), and Rocky Colavito (45 HR, 112 RBI) on offense, while Ed Summers (21-18) won 20 games and Willie Hernandez (18 Saves) and George Suggs (26 Saves) combined for 44 Saves.
The Dodgers limped to the finish line, despite good seasons Duke Snider (42 HR, 85 RBI), Carl Furillo (.304 AVG, 20 HR, 97 RBI), Mike Piazza (38 HR, 103 RBI), Zack Wheat (.313 AVG), and Roy Campanella (31 HR), and Mike Marshall saved 39 games.

The West was a Chicago affair, ultimately won by the Cubs, as Pete Alexander (23-12, 3.65 ERA) won the Cy Young Award, while many Cubs hurlers had good seasons as well, most notably Jack Taylor (22-14), Jack Pfiester (17-9), Mordecai Brown (19-16, 3.88 ERA), and Bruce Sutter (41 Saves). Ernie Banks (54 HR, 139 RBI, .308 AVG), Hack Wilson (57 HR, 148 RBI .302 AVG), Rogers Hornsby (36 HR, 114 RBI, .321 AVG), and Gabby Hartnett (46 HR, 103 RBI) were the offensive standouts for the Cubs.
The White Sox finished second to their Northside rivals. Hoyt Wilhelm saved a league-leading 45 games, and Ed Walsh (19-13, 3.47 ERA) and Eddie Cicotte (19-17, 3.88 ERA) pitched well for the Southsiders. Frank Thomas (44 HR, 120 RBI), Dick Allen (36 HR, 123 RBI), Luke Appling (.304 AVG), Joe Jackson (.328 AVG), and Tim Raines (.305 AVG, 111 RBI) sparked the offense.
The Reds finished just behind the White Sox. Joe Morgan (.285 AVG, 120 Runs), George Foster (47 HR, 118 RBI), Frank Robinson (45 HR, 123 RBI), Cesar Cedeno (26 HR, 111 RBI), and Harry Heilmann (.320 AVG) produced runs, but other than Bucky Walters (19-15, 3.97 ERA), the pitching staff had trouble stopping the opposition’s offense.
The Braves returned to their regular state of “haplessness”, as Hank Aaron (36 HR, 88 RBI, .318 AVG) was the one shining light that was not an oncoming train for Braves fans.

The Giants and Cubs squared off in the Semi-Finals, and Pete Alexander and Rube Marquard set the tone for the series with an outstanding pitcher’s duel in Game 1. Alexander made only one mistake, a solo home run by MVP Barry Bonds in the 4th inning, while Marquard shut out the Cubs on 6 hits, giving the Giants a 1-0 win. Game 2 was an exciting affair, as Bonds started the scoring for the Giants again by smashing a 2-run home run in the first inning. Hack Wilson decided to challenge Bonds single-handedly, hitting a solo shot in the 4th, and singling in a run in the 5th to tie the game at 2. Bonds homered yet again the bottom of the 8th inning to give the Giants a 3-2 lead, but Andre Dawson’s 9th inning homer tied the game, sending it into extra frames. The Cubs looked to win the game in the 10th, as Wilson and Ernie Banks singled, placing men on first and third with only one out. Ripper Collins then ripped a ground shot to shortstop, and as Hack Wilson lumbered home, Travis Jackson’s throw to the plate beat him by a step and Chief Meyers hung on for the tag despite being bowled over by Wilson. Gabby Hartnett then grounded out to end the inning. In the bottom of the frame, for some inexplicable reason, the Cubs chose to pitch to Bonds. He launched the first pitch he saw into the centerfield bleachers, giving the Giants a 4-3 win and a 2-0 series lead. Bonds had 3 home runs in the game, and in the first 2 games had provided all the Giants offense, with 4 home runs and 5 RBI.
Game 3 moved to Wrigley Field, and the Cubs followed Jack Pfiester to a 4-3 victory. Harry Steinfeldt homered and had 4 hits to lead the Cubs offense, while Pfiester cooled Barry Bonds’ hot bat.
Game 4 saw the Giants take an early 2-0 lead, as Willie Mays doubled in a run in the 1st and Matt Williams hit a solo home run in the 2nd. Freddie Lindstrom and Kiki Cuyler each hit solo shots in the 4th, and the Giants led 3-1. Joe McGinnity shut the Cubs down after Cuyler’s home run, giving the Giants a 5-1 win and another berth in the World Series.

The other Semi-Final saw the A’s face the Wild Card Red Sox. Game 1 was scoreless until the 4th, when Cy Young walked 3 straight A’s and then allowed Mickey Cochrane’s bases-loaded double, giving the A’s a 4-0 lead. Rico Petrocelli and Jim Rice each homered twice for the Red sox as the game progressed, but Reggie Jackson homered and drove in 3 to provide enough offense for the A’s to hang on a win 7-6. Game 2 saw Petrocelli continue his torrid hitting, as he homered twice and drove in 5 Red Sox runners. His 1st and 3rd inning blasts gave the Red Sox a 5-0 lead, and the Red Sox added to the lead, while Bill Dinneen pitched well enough to get the victory, an 8-4 Red Sox win.
As the series moved to Boston, Game 3 saw the A’s procure 3 quick runs in the first off of Roger Clemens, as Rickey Henderson doubled and Reggie Jackson homered. Clemens then proceeded to stop the bleeding, while his offensive mates began pecking away at the A’s lead. Rice and Elston Howard homered, and Clemens took a 5-4 lead into the 9th inning. Al Simmons, the tying run, singled to start the 9th, and then Sal Bando doubled to left, though the A’s held Simmons at 3rd. Clemens gave way to closer Dick Radatz, and the A’s chose to take advantage of the lull to set up a suicide squeeze to catch the Red Sox off guard. Eddie Joost bunted back to the surprised Radatz, but it was too late to catch Simmons who barreled in with the tying run. Radatz seemed shaken, as he walked the next batter. Then, Eddie Collins smashed Radatz’ pitch down the third base line, where Boggs made a good stop but had no play, and Bando scored the go-ahead run. Dennis Eckersley shut out the Red Sox in the bottom of the 9th, and the A’s had a crucial 6-5 win. Game 4 was crucial for the Sox, and they turned to Tex Hughson. Hughson received help, as Ted Williams and Elston Howard hit back-to-back homers in the 4th, but then the detested bunter, Eddie Joost, changed strategy and hit a solo home run off Hughson. (As an aside, in “real life”, Joost is the oldest living member of a World Series champion team, the 1940 Reds.) Jim Rice homered in the 7th to end the scoring, while Radatz pitched strongly in relief to give the Red Sox a 4-2 victory and tie the series at 2-2 with the all-important Game 5 giving a World Series trip to the winner.
Game 5 was a matchup between Cy Young and Chief Bender. In the top of the 2nd inning, Rudy York smashed a 2-run home run off Bender, and then Bender surrendered a 3-run shot in the 3rd to Sox hero Rico Petrocelli. Young pitched well up until the 6th, when the A’s began to put runners on base. Again, the base on balls was a problem for Young, who walked Jimmie Foxx and Mark McGwire before Al Simmons singled to load the bases. Sal Bando’s sacrifice fly scored Foxx, and then Wade Boggs’ error at third allowed McGwire to score, while moving Simmons and Mickey Cochrane to 2nd and 3rd. Billy North then singled in both runners to bring the A’s back to only a 5-4 deficit. The game moved on to the 9th, where the Red Sox blew the game open with a series of singles and walks. By the time the inning ended, the Red Sox led 9-4, and Young finished the game to give the Red Sox their second straight trip to the World Series.

Game 1 of the World Series began in Candlestick Park, as the season-long rivals Red Sox and Giants met one more time for baseball’s biggest prize. Game 1 was another pitcher’s duel, as Roger Clemens and Christy Mathewson clashed. Clemens allowed only two hits in shutting out the Giants, while Bobby Doerr’s third inning RBI double was all that was needed as the Red Sox won 1-0. Game 2 was a showcase for Giants’ hurler Joe McGinnity, who scattered 6 hits and allowed only one Red Sox run during a complete game 10-1 victory. Barry Bonds was again the Giants offensive leader, as he homered and drove in 3 runs.
Game 3 saw the series move to Boston, in a game very similar to Game 2, except for the winner. Cy Young shut out the Giants on 6 hits, while Rico Petrocelli homered again as part of a Red Sox barrage that scored 9 runs, giving the Red Sox a 9-0 win. Game 4 gave the appearance of a seesaw affair in this Series, as the Giants scored 3 runs in the first 5 innings off of Tex Hughson. The Sox scored 2 in the 6th and 7th, and a 3-2 Giants lead moved to the 9th. Barry Bonds singled in the 9th, but then right specialist Dan Osinski induced Willie Mays to hit into an inning-ending double play. In the bottom of the inning, the A’s chose to leave starter Rube Marquard in the game. After getting the first out, Marquard allowed Rudy York to double to center. With first base open and Eckersley well-rested, the Giants chose to leave Marquard in and pitch to postseason hero Rico Petrocelli. Petrocelli did not give John McGraw much time to ponder his decision, as Petrocelli crushed his 8th postseason homer into left field, giving the Red Sox an improbable come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Giants.
Barry Bonds would not let Petrocelli have the last word, as he and the Giants ripped into Roger Clemens in Game 5, scoring 9 runs in the first two innings to make short work of the Red Sox. Bonds hit 2 more home runs and drove in 5 runs, assisted by Willie McCovey and his homer and 4 RBI. Mathewson got the 13-7 win but, most importantly, the Red Sox lost Carl Yastrzemski for the remainder of the series when Mathewson’s 9th inning fastball broke Yaz’s wrist.
On that somber note, the Red Sox headed west for Game 6. Joe McGinnity threw another complete game, and Willie McCovey gave the Giants all 4 of their runs with his 4th inning grand slam. John McGraw and the Giants seemed to have all the momentum moving to Game 7, but as Earl Weaver once said, “Momentum? Momentum is the next day’s starting pitcher.” The next day’s starting pitcher was Cy Young, and he provided all that the Red Sox would need. Barry Bonds hit his 8th postseason home run, but Young then stopped the Giants scoring. The Red Sox had a hard time with Juan Marichal’s high leg kick but, by the 7th inning, the Red Sox had figured him out. Petrocelli, York, and Rice hit 3 straight singles, loading the bases. Elston Howard then doubled in 2 runs to give the Red Sox the lead, but they were not through. Mike Higgins, Bobby Doerr, and Tris Speaker hit singles, giving the Red Sox 7 straight hits before Wade Boggs’ inning-ending double play. Young then turned the 4-1 Red Sox lead over to Radatz, who was lights out in the World Series after allowing Joost’s suicide squeeze back in the Semi-Finals. Radatz didn’t allow the Giants to threaten and, when Roger Connor grounded to short, Postseason MVP Rico Petrocelli scooped it up to get the force out at second and the Red Sox had won the World Series back-to-back. Petrocelli ended the postseason with an unbelievable 10 home runs, 19 RBI, and .354 Average. Just as in 1903, the upstart Red Sox had beaten John McGraw’s Giants when it mattered most.

REDS, DODGERS, and PIRATES never made the Finals.

The DODGERS mage the playoffs 3 times, while the PIRATES and REDS only made the playoffs once each.....

Thought it was cool that 3 of the worst franchises for most of the duration each made one Finals appearance as the League was winding down, although the WHITE SOX, BRAVES, and BELTWAY BOYS couldnt beat a more established team for the crown...........

Thanks for the great re-caps, Andy. I guess I'm always the bridesmaid in these leagues: 15 seasons, 2 finals losses, 4 semi-finals losses. Maybe I'll turn things around in the NCAA league, where I'm in the finals in the first season. It would be something b/c I haven't won an ATG league ATGIII v. 1 in 2007!
