Since my themes always seem to stir anything ranging from gnashing of teeth to threats of quitting, I am going to toss out some of my ideas to allow the masses to point out the defects or just plain say thats stupid before I get to focused on one idea:
1.Platoon the middle: Requires a platoon at C, 2b, ss and cf. Not necessarily the traditional lefty/righty platoon however. You could apportion out games as you see fit but both guys must start at least 75 games. Certainly there would need to be rules to accomodate drop adds or trades(to prevent someone from using DiMaggio/Butler platoon where Dimaggio started the first 75 games and then swapped out the two for two 5 mill guys or other devious finagling)
2. All 9 hitters from different decades
3. All 24 players start with different letters of alphabet
4. 8 starting defensive players: for every 1 you need a 4 for every two you need a 3.
5. draft only from AL pre 1960, NL pre 1960, AL 1960 and after or NL 1960 or after. 3 guys draft from each group and then one goes in each division
Don't worry, I am not trying to make all 5 into one theme, I would end up using only one of them. I probably have a lot of time to come up with something else as well so may not use any but want to know sooner rather than later if I will cause undue consternation.

Just some of the theme ideas I've been kicking around -
1. No bench/subs/platooners or pitchers of $1m or less (a position player who will start every game could be less than $1m, however).
2. Every team must have TWO starting position players who are balanced slanted to their batting side (EX - Cepeda or J. Clark who are RH hitters slanted to the right) and ONE SP who is balanced favoring his opposite side (Ex - Marquard, a lefty thrower who is more effective vs RH hitters).
3. Let HAL do the lineups! No one may set his batting order; Hal runs it the entire season. (We'd all be on the honor system for this, of course).
4. East plays in Griffith, Central in 65 Dodger and West in Candlestick, but no SPs over $6m allowed!
5. No starting position players who had less than 20 steals for their carded season. In addition, no minus arm catchers allowed, either as starters or backups.

my idea: Lie, Cheat, Steal and Jail
if we have in season compliance requirements (decades, line-ups etc), then each team would have an incentive to "sneak" noncompliance through once per week.
The risk of being caught/outed would be the normal (or lesser---we will discuss) penalty.
If a GM was successful in sneaking a breach by his foe, he would earn a GTJ card against that foe. If caught, the "detective" cracking the case would earn a GTJ against the breaching team.
Purposeful breaches may only be "outed" by the foe played.
No more than 2 GTJ cards could be earned in any 2 week period by a team.
You must make at least one noncompliance attempt per week. An attempt may not involve a free agent pick-up of a player with a greater than $3M salary.
Each playoff team my carry an unplayed GTJ card (which is foe specific) to playoffs to use against the team against which the GTJ card was earned. That Card may not be used in Games 1-2 of the playoff (or Finals) Series but could be used for any night of games thereafter (yup, that means it could be played in game 7 or 5).
Thoughts?
