24 TKL Summer Cuts & Draft

[quote:0b9e9e20c9="7smitty7"]I think it is unnecessary in a 24 team league when so many people must be on the same page (for such little reward).[/quote:0b9e9e20c9]

As someone who was fairly high up in the draft (i.e., has a horrid team), I think this is the crux of the issue. There aren't too many hidden gems in this draft, and to ask the managers of the league to herd the cats for that seems onerous.

Having said that, I can't say it means a great deal to me to have the draft or not. I feel the same way about the second season, and I'd hate to lose the Commish over it.

Hey guys, is all the drama really necessary? Why not just enforce the rules, as written, and quit waffling on decisions already made?

If I recall correctly, we voted to keep the 2-season schedule and we voted to switch to DH next year.

The commish independently modified the draft clock to add time slots (not in the rules), but nobody complained so that precedent was used again this time.

Right now, we have 8 votes to keep this year's results -- since nobody actually asked to have them scrapped, I believe -- so one more vote will make a super-majority in the opposite direction impossible.

We also have the question of next year's supplemental draft on the table, currently at a 6-5 vote. That means we will most likely continue with the supp. draft, although the results are almost meaningless.

Right now, for example, we have a simple two-round draft that's still hanging on, incomplete and now in its sixth day.

Oh yeah, and then there's the manager who has not checked in for weeks, along with the one who quit in disgust. Isn't it time to replace them?

It will be one month tomorrow since the regular season ended and we're still just wandering about.

My team will be pretty bad in this second season, as we work on rebuilding from last year's 99-win club and the bums who followed it. But I'm willing to suffer my lumps and get on with it.

I'd like to see the folks running the league actually do that and see the 24-team keeper concept continued. Is anybody with me on that?

Like I said, I just do not have the time to be an effective commish with this size of a league. I had no idea how time consuming it would be.

I nominate tcochran to be the new commish.

Tcochran, I do believe we have made decisions and could go ahead, except for one thing, Two people who have been doing part of the commissioner's duties, (cshannajr and kaviksdad), have said that they are overwhelmed and do not wish to continue, in cshannajr's case at least with second seasons.
We can not hold a gun to their heads, and say you must continue because we took a vote.

So I think we should continue with the decisions as made, if we can find folks who will take over the commish's duties, I am willing to continue with the draft pieces, and take over all the communication and decision making around the draft around the draft, but I am also close to my max, and that is all I can do.
That leaves, someone to do general commissioner's duties, making decisions at points of questions and conflicts, and at this point, most importantly finding replacement owners.
It also leaves updating rosters and sending them out, and doing the players available sheets before a season starts.
If we can fill those slots, I think we should go ahead with season two and follow our votes as made.
If we can not fill those slots, I don't know how we can go ahead.

Do we have volunteers for the missing pieces of the commish job?

Kim, I understand that KD does not want to continue with roster prep -- although I do hope he decides to stay with the league!

In any case, I can do the rosters, if you'd like, although I would publish them in a different manner. For that, see a sample of the online rosters I publish for the retro keeper league I run, at:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AoHpyvKb9bEHdE5KV2VkZFF5TzYxY191X2JrTHNURkE&hl=en#gid=5

By the way, the league rules say that "5) The league Commish shall maintain a record of all drafts, transactions and player movements and provide a copy to any owner on request." I would be happy to do that (online), but I do not see the necessity of adding the list of draftable players into the mix. That is a lot of extra work that Chuck took on and is not part of the rules.

As to actually being the Commish, I'd be willing to do that, too -- although I hope Chuck will reconsider. I do agree that making sure we have 24 managers who are willing to participate is very important. If we do not have managers who are going to do their parts, too, then it does not matter who runs drafts or prepares rosters or makes decisions.

A number of us run other keeper leagues. We probably each have the occasional speed bumps, but the 12-team leagues seem to putter along quite nicely, as a general rule.

The question of the day is probably this: Can a 24-team league continue, if the managers do not actively particpate on a regular basis?

What do you all think?

TC - it looks like you are the man for the job (not that any of this is my decision). Your spreadsheet looks good, and not too different from KD's.

So, if TC handles general commish duties as well as the official spreadsheets, and Litangel handles all drafts - then we appear to be set.

All that needs to be decided is whether we will hold a FA supplemental draft between seasons one and two of each year.

In addition we need at least two new managers - one for CATom, and one for RiojaDave, who hasn't checked in weeks - and then a replacement for Kaviksdad after season two.

I personally enjoy the challenge of this 24 team league, and think we just need managers who understand the commitment, and there are enough out there to do this. There's no reason this can't work.

Does this adequately sum up where we are at this point?

Tom Pierce, a manager from my other league, the Summer - Winter Keeper League, has offered to join us here, if and when we get ready to start up again.
