I disagree strongly that changing pitchers at 9:59 is Bush. I do it all the time in the playoffs.

Doug,

I have to disagree with you. Trying to "trick" your way into extra credits is bogus. Play the game straight up and may the best team win. Playing those games is ridiculous. What's the point of making the last minute switch?

Personal Opinion,

Nice to see both playoff series going to 5 games.

Personally I don't care when an owner finalizes his rotation/roster for the night, so long as it is by the official deadline. And in return if I get home at 9:30pm and that is when I make my final decision and an owner wants to whine about it - that is his/her problem not mine.

Most of the time I do play it straight up. That's the nature of the ATG game. However, if I have three or four nickle "fourth starters" why should I give you an advantage by telling you which one I will throw? You're a smart guy, you ought to be able to "know" who I'm "really" going to throw (much like Petro with his Grant/Hunter combo) and adjust accordingly.

Or, maybe I won't throw who you think I will.

Nickle starters (the good ones, anyways) tend to be heavily slanted. If I know I am playing only one RH starter in the series and his name is Black or even Hunter, I am much more likely to adjust my starting players if I have someone who is even close to comperable who is LH or SH. One could argue that this is just as bogus as hiding your SP, would Johnny Burnett ever start against a normal RHP over Steinfeldt? I think not.

Cliffhanger of a game. Exceptional series. Sorry one of us had to lose, but if it had to be someone... :D

Another Martina/Hubbell for us. We just suck in the playoffs. :( Seems to happen to us a lot. I thought we might get past it this time given the breaks we got in game 3, but nope. Same old crap shoot.

Clearly we were pretty damn cold to hit ONE HR in that series, especially with long ball Jim Hunter going in game 5. :( Hitting .200 with no power is an anomaly for this squad. Ott, Frisch, Alou all below .200 and Chance a whopping .238. Picked a bad time to go cold after smoking the whole season.

Well, at least we lost to a very good team. You don't win 95 games with this group without being good. Clearly Agate was very good and matched up well with us. It's just frustrating to get shutdown by Hunter and Conseugura, 5 hitter? Yeesh. At least we could have lost 8-7 or something it would go down easier. Agate makes 4 errors and we can't do anything. Left guys on almost every inning. :(

The Agate staff clearly rose to the occassion posting a 1.96 ERA with a 1.02 WHIP in 5 games against the team that scored the second most runs in the regular season. :o Ouch. That's some clutch pitching for you!

I tip my cap to you Petro, your guys performed better than my bunch of chokers. They got the big games from Hunter and your LHSP and a big 9th inning HR from Aaron and that's all you needed.

Congrats!

AT/Doug,

I don't have a problem if that's your normal time to adjust things, but it's not very realistic to not know who's going to start a game when you set your lineup!

I just think it's not very "baseball-like" and unless you just dont' have time before 9:30 at night you shouldn't do it.

Just my opinion,

Here's the game 5 writeup...

[quote:5d57782ca7="HAL"]In an great finish the Beowulf Agate 27 came back in the top of the ninth and held on to win over the Chico Wonder Boys by a score of 3 to 2 at Forbes Field '27.

Beowulf came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. Mickey Mantle started the inning off right when he laced a one-base hit. Hank Aaron came to the plate and smashed a two-run homer (his 3rd of the season). Beowulf rapped out 7 hits for the afternoon.

The win was credited to Sandy Consuegra(1-1) who went 3 innings allowing 1 run. Dizzy Dean(1-1) was the loser. He surrendered only 3 runs and 7 hits in 9 innings.

JetMan was not very talkative after his team's tough loss. 'I'm not in the mood for questions, but I'm sure Petrosian will be glad to talk about the game as long as you have questions to ask.'[/quote:5d57782ca7]

Congrats to Petrosian & tkl33 on their superb game 5 wins...

Now it'll be Petro's HR-hitting Polo34 club (297 HR's on the season, led by Mantle, Stargell and AAron) against tkl's squad led by Pete Alexander & Addie Joss (combined 46-22, 2.4 ERA)... Pete & Addie's combined salary of 24M is almost as much as Petro's entire staff salary (27M), so it truly will be two different-styled clubs facing each other.

Though playing in Forbes ('09 version), tkl's Hummers have some power too- they hit 99 HR's, led by Banks with 41. The Hummers have two lefties in the offensive lineup, and both are lefty-balanced (jojo 2L, Waner 1L) so Petro's SP strengthens a little as four of his 6 SP's are righty-balanced (Ames, Barber, Grant, Hunter).

Because Agate is the wildcard, they will surrender home field advantage to the Hummers despite having 8 more regular season wins.
Interestingly... though playing in different parks, both pitching staffs surrendered about the the same number of HR's (125 Agate, 123 Hummers), but on offense there was a 3-1 difference (Agate 297, Hummers 99)... give credit to the Agate pitching staff.

It'll be an interesting series...

And to think I was just 29 wins shy of being in the finals myself.

Congratulation, Petrosian. Your gaming of the starting pitching is a very effective strategy. I tip my hat to you. We may have our integrity intact but you got the credit and a trip to the finals! Good luck and represent our division well.

Now, now, I thought we already went over this. It wasn't intended to be gaming in and of itself, 40 teams going, etc., anyone remember that part?

I'm not sure that gaming the SP's provided the series-winning 2-run HR by Aaron, nor did it lead to hitting just one HR in the series.

I don't think anyone should purposely hide their SP's until the last moment, but if that's the way the online game works, and it's so important to an opposing team, then last-minute checking and further strategy contingencies should be built in to protect against it, IMHO.
