Draft is complete.
As for all the aggrieved fan bases, the question is:
Is it worse to have fond memories (We Are Family for the Pirates, The Denkinger Game for the Royals) and no hope in the modern era, or rare hope and guaranteed stomach punches (Bartman for the Cubs or Bucky Dent, Calvin Schiraldi/Bob Stanley/Buckner, Aaron Boone for the Red Sox)?
I'm going to go with the Cubs as the most pity worthy fan base. If you are my age (just shy of 40) you've seen the Pirates win it all, you've seen the Royals win it all. You've seen the Mets, the Blue Jays, the Giants, the Braves, the A's, the White Sox and even the Red Sox win it all. But we did the math in the office, and it's entirely likely that no living person remembers the Cubs winning the big one. And the folks who remember the last time they even played the big one are dying off.
Yep, Cubs should have the franchise on sad fan bases.
