The Montreal Eagles, nee Marlins, have completed their almost total overhaul from a disappointing Season VI. With the influx of new players, and the ability to re-design their ballpark, the Montreal based ballclub has headed in a new direction, cutting ties with many of its old favourites, in an effort to start off with a bang.
The only Eagles who played last season with the Montreal club were C. Yastrzemski, G. Roenicke & Bobby L. Brown. The only other player who has had a stint on the club at some time during the past 6 seasons is L. Parrish (36 HR in Season V).
Montreal management officials state this is in part due to a philosophy focusing on defense, hustle & health. The team last season committed 135 errors, 3rd worst in the league, and stole a league low 18 SB with a terrible .621 SB success rate, also league worst. Although the new look Eagles will never be overly threatening on the basepaths, they should motor around a lot quicker with no runner with a base speed below 11 and Jackie Robinson at the leadoff position.
This overhaul included some very tough decisions, like trading away Robin Yount. However Yount had made 31 errors, and had had back to back subpar seasons, failing to reach 30 HR, 110 RBI or slug above .500 for 2 consecutive seasons. So it was felt that Yount would succeed better in a different environment
The new 2B/SS combination of Hornsby & Crosetti should definitely improve the up the middle defense, and could quite possibly commit less errors combined (14/18 error ratings) than Yount did last season. Werber on the hot corner may not be as tough a bat as Killebrew, but he will definitely not allow as many balls to scoot into LF.
Also the addition of Maris in RF, should cut down on some of the runers scoring on singles from 2nd base that seemed to be all too frequent with Clark roaming RF.
Furthermore with Bench & Parrish behind the plate, there should not be a repeat of last season when 111 SB were allowed. So hopefully that not only will less people score from 2nd base, there will be even less people in a position to score.
Many fans will wonder if this increased emphasis on defense and hustling to the ball, and around the basepaths will detract from their offense. Considering the team hit a horrendous .236 while slugging only .418 and getting on at a .317 clip - how could it get any worse?
In any case Robinson is a natural hitter, and Maris, Covington & Yastrzemski all have a ton of natural HR while Hornsby & Dawson can just as easily belt out doubles as HR. Even Werber has 27 Hit Chances & 40+ OBP on both sides, something Killebrew did not have.
And last but not least, the addition of Short, Hughes & Mullin means there is hope that no pitcher will be giving up 40+ HR like Lemon did last season.
All in all - there is hope in Montreal - nonetheless the season has just started and only time will tell if hope will blossom into summer success or fall failure.
