Oh, I see. I am trying to encourage debate on a situation not covered by the rules. You are trying to suppress my opinion by telling me the debate is over with your last post.

1. Neither of us is the final authority.

2. Turtle currently owns 30 "players" - 20 keepers and 10 picks. We can't name all those players yet, but the rules say he must exercise 10 draft picks.

3. The rules say that prospects may be activated at any time. The rules also require you to drop players whenever you make a transaction that gets you over the 30 player limit.

4. By activating prospects now, without dropping players, Turtle gains the advantage of having the last player on his roster an 8th round pick while the rest of us have to have two players of lesser value.

It's clear to me that the whole issue is anyting but cut and dried. And I encourage further input from others. I will leave it to the more up tight segment of the league to attempt to stifle debate on this issue.

Since you can activate a PROSPECT at any time, I don't see anything wrong with this. You could do the same thing if you like. Otherwise, perhaps a vote should be taken to limit when a prospect could be activated.

I am sorry. It's just that you made your point and you have a history of disagreeing with me. If you don't like me, fine, whatever, I am just trying to help the league be fair for everyone. Maybe I read a little too much "Shut the hell up, Cal" in the tone of your earlier comments.[/color:79c837b011]

1. Neither of us is the final authority.
Who made that claim? Ultimately I imagine Turtle will make a ruling and we'll all move on.[/color:79c837b011]

2. Turtle currently owns 30 "players" - 20 keepers and 10 picks. We can't name all those players yet, but the rules say he must exercise 10 draft picks.
At the start of the FA draft, Turtle 'owns' 20 players max, plus a separate prospects list.[/color:79c837b011]

3. The rules say that prospects may be activated at any time. The rules also require you to drop players whenever you make a transaction that gets you over the 30 player limit.
Only provided there is roster space available.[/color:79c837b011]

4. By activating prospects now, without dropping players, Turtle gains the advantage of having the last player on his roster an 8th round pick while the rest of us have to have two players of lesser value.
We agree if he activates the prospects, players need to be dropped. I was saying, perhaps incorrectly, that in addition, the players that are dropped need to be off-limits to the entire league for the FA draft because the promotions and corresponding drops were not made prior to the draft. [/color:79c837b011] Are you suggesting that the rules indicate that if Turtle were forced to keep Wood and Herndon, then he wouldn't have roster room to legally promote his prospects after the draft because his roster would be full at 30?[/color:79c837b011]

It's clear to me that the whole issue is anyting but cut and dried.

Like I said, maybe I am beginning to understand your point. I still think it is cut and dried, but I didn't have it right. Regardless, I am fine with whatever the commish rules. I just wish that Turtle had posted his promotions/drops before the draft started.

All I really want to know for sure is: Are Wood and Herndon in the draft pool.

I understand your point now, rburgh. I think. (I guess I am never quite sure, but I am trying!)

Either the commish makes an exception to allow his promotion of prospects and drops, or if we go by the letter of the rules, Turtle has to keep Herndon and Wood until the Supplemental Draft and will not be able to promote prospects until that time either since there would be no way to create the room on his roster (except, I suppose, if Turtle made an unbalanced trade opening up roster spots).

Sounds like a mess, and I am sorry if I took something everyone was fine with and made it into an issue. I am fine if the commish decides to let it slide and with whatever happens with Herndon and Wood, as long as everyone else is. I'd just say 'don't let it happen again'. We had plenty of time leading up to this draft to make sure our rosters were in order, after all :)

Re: Drops, promotions, etc.

Postby travelingjack » Thu Apr 19, 2012 3:21 pm

This is a big stinking mess, I want nothing to do with it. See you later...

The rules are contradictory, they do say a prospect can be promoted anytime but they also say:

[quote:9b2136d964]4) Regular players on the 30 man roster cannot be released in order to promote a prospect while a season is in progress.
5) Regular players can be released from the 30 man roster only for the following: a) pre-draft release prior to Annual Free Agent draft; b) pre-draft release prior to Supplemental free agent draft; c) to bring a roster down to the 30 man limit as a result of an unbalanced transaction.
[/quote:9b2136d964]

Technically the season is not in progress but the draft has started already so allowing promos and drops now could cause headaches, unfair maneuvering, etc. This is only my 2nd year of SOMO but I think the generally accepted rule is that once the draft starts there are no changes unless an error is discovered, you "roll with what you got". I'm not disparaging Turtle, it just causes a mess when players become eligible halfway through a draft. Having said that, if the promos/drops are allowed, then the following should be emphasized:

1. The dropped players will be eligible to be drafted, starting at the beginning of the next round. This would give everyone the same chance (roughly, discounting extra picks, etc.) at them as if they were there at the beginning of the draft and would eliminate the question of if it gives the releasing owner an advantage of having the dropped players sit out a season.

2. Before the next draft the rules are written to clarify this situation one way or the other.

Sorry to cause a stir. I thought I had posted the drops and promos and they were not on the roster sheet. Since, it seems I never did that, I will hold onto them and drop them after the draft. They will be available in the supplemental draft. Per the rules, this is the best option.

Although, I would be open to trading them for a round 10 or later pick if someone wants them.
