General Managers Keeper League

[quote:27890d030f="kaviksdad"]I was wondering when THIS question would come up, and I figured it would be one of 3 guys who caught it. And I was right - it was one of the 3 guys I figured who caught.

Yes, I am aware of this and it was my intent to make it this way.

My philosophy when starting this league was to make sure everyone churned their rosters regularly, which is why the league requires at least 25% of every manager's team to be released each year. My goal was to increase competitive balance and keep everyone interested. Constant losing (except for me it seems) tends to discourage interest, increase frustration and can lead to loss of managers. I was hoping to keep everyone with the idea that in any year they could win it all with good roster management.

The prospect glitch that Smokey refers to is a secondary part of this concept. I have seen managers hoard prospects in other leagues and use them to supplement a very solid core of regular players. The results of this is often a free agent draft where a few managers have a small number of picks because they already are set at every position. I didn't want that here.

The way around the prospect issue that Smokey refers to is also in the rules. Prospects can be promoted at any time during each season, provided you have roster space to do so. You can't drop a regular player just to promote a prospect, but you can promote a prospect to fill a vacant position that results from an unbalanced trade. That's the key - if you have a bunch of prospects and are in fear of losing some the following spring make an unbalanced trade or two and clear roster space. Then promote as many prospects as necessary to your regular roster to fill the open slots.[/quote:27890d030f]

Ok not a problem, we have ways of dealing with this. :-)

One other question though - this league drafts after cards come out, and with the limited card set, right? I ask because if Wilson Ramos is not given a card in the normal set, I won't promo him. I can also likely get by without promoting Castro.

More to come....

Postby qksilver69 » Sat Feb 05, 2011 6:53 pm

I made a deal with Palmtana as follows:

He gets: Zito, B League, 2011 2nd FA (#20), 2011 3rd FA (#28), 1st Rnd prospect pick (#8), 3rd round prospect pick (#25)
for
BJ Upton, M Morse, Palmtana's 1st round prospect pick (#3)

Palmtana to confirm.

You're right Dave - the limited set after the cards come out.

I wanted GMKL to be a little different from the rest of the leagues, hence the "difficulties" that seem arise around draft time each year with rosters.

I don't want any Yankee/Red Sox teams here - only 12 fairly even matched "Oakland/SF" type teams that should have a shot each year. If you have to cut a Jason Heyward because you're loaded everywhere else - so be it (no personal reference intended Dave :) ). I don't want it to be too easy, or have a repeat winner each year just because someone got lucky and drafted Pujols, Braun & Tulo - which does happen in other keepers.

There may come the time where we re-examine the prospect rules, but as of right now we're going by what we've got.

Ramon Castro bubble boy

Postby qksilver69 » Sun Feb 06, 2011 11:06 am

Welcome Palmtana!

KD, FYI I have no issues with the rules, just wanted to make sure I understood how to comply.

Folks, Ramon Castro is my bubble boy. I have room for him, but acquiring Ruiz means Castro would not make my playoff roster. That said, I think he's a useful piece in this card set - low on OB, but TB vs LH is a whopping 77, 8 BP HRs, and an incredible *15* points of natural HRs. This means he'll have a natural HR roll on 4-5-6-7 vs LHs (with the 7 half HR, half 2B). He holds his own vs RH with 34 pts of OB, 47 pts of TB, and 4 BP & natural HR.

Contenders missing a C vs LH should give me a holler. Offhand some of you are:

Chuck - pair with Montero
Smokey - much better than Iannetta in this set, vs both sides

Not looking for much, a minor FA pick upgrade is all it will take or a 3rd rnd prospect pick.

Seeking to Reshape the Gorillas.

Indeed Welcome Palmtana. I see you've already become well acquainted with Qksilver's silver tongue. He usually does give good advice.

We're trying to cut back to 30 now and find an embarrassment of youngish starters and oldish closers, all of whom are well worth a spot on many rosters. 2B is over-covered.

At the moment we have DHs in abundance, but who doesn't? As some have pointed out, we also have 3 1B if Big Pappi is counted.

This year's club is looking to contend, as mad as that may seem for a club that finished with 103 loses in Season 2 last year! We are seeking to move players likely to be cut and look forward to your emails. Greatest needs probably at CF where Ellsbury once roamed, 3B where the Panda holds forth, and someone to brace up Bartlett.
