Game I between the Savoy Specials and the visiting Hollywood Monacos was a solid pitchers duel for the most part. The Specials scored the only runs of the game in the 1st inning, when Felipe Alou smashed a 2 run HR.

Other than that, it was all pitching, as Vance & Cicotte continued to put up goose egss on the score board, inning after inning. Cicotte lasted 7 innings, allowing only those 2 1st inning runs, and while he just had 1 K, he also only allowed 1 walk. Vance was almost magnificent, going 8 and 2/3rds innings, striking out 15 while only allowing 4 base runners.

After Vance walked Stargell with 2 outs in the 9th, the Savoys elected to play it safe, and called in Tippy Martinez to close out the game. Tippy made it interesting at first, allowing Mattingly to smack a single, putting Stargell on 3rd. However he quickly settled down and burned 3 strikes past the ever dangerous Ernie Banks to end the Monacos threat.

The Monacos made up for being shutout of the scoreboard in Game I, by quickly scoring a run in the 1st inning of Game II. After Aaron had grounded into a double play, Banks belted a triple, and easily scored when Fernandez made a throwing error on the next play. Aarond redeemed himself in the 3rd to smack a solo HR to make the score 2-0.

Using small ball tactics, the Specials got on the scoreboard in the 5th. Fernandez smacked a line drive and legged it out into a double. Hubbell made a classic bunt sacrifice to move him to third and Eddie Collins put the ball in play where the only option was the play at 1st, allowing Fernandez to score.

However Hammerin' Hank would put the game out of the Specials reach when he blasted a 2 run HR in the 7th, part of a 3 run inning that put the Monacos ahead 5-1. They added an insurance run in the 8th, before the Specials knocked in a couple during an abortive rally in the the bottom half of that inning. Nonetheless that was the last scoring of the game, and the Monacos headed home feeling good about having earned a split. I would be the last time they felt good that season.

The Monacos came home and quickly took a 1-0 lead when Aaron smashed his 5th HR of the playoffs. It looked for the longest time that this lead might hold up, as both Dean & Willis kept it scoreless for the next 5 innings.

Alas, this will all change in the 7th inning. Lloyd Waner hit a double and was immediately driven in by Sanguillen's single. Fernandez continued the onslaught with a texas leaguer single and Dizzy Dean sacrificed them over the 2nd & 3rd. Then leadoff hitter Eddie Collins battled it out with Willis and finally smacked a double to deep right field, allowing both Fernandez & Sanguillen to score.

The Monacos would try to rally, but Ceys solo shot in the bottom of the 7th would be all they they could managed. It would not be enough as Dean gave way to Garber who pitched up a 1-2-3 9th to give the Specials a 2-1 lead in the Series.

Lou Gehrig would become a hated name in Hollywood after Game IV. Gehring pretty much would single handedly wreck the Monacos chances at the Series Championship with his 5 RBI effort in Game IV.

Gehrig smacked a 2 run double in the 1st, added a solo HR in the 3rd, and would put the game out of the Monacos reach, after they had worked hard to erase a 4-0 defict, with another HR, his 2nd 2 RBI inning, to help turn the score from 5-4 to 8-4.

Killian was not very popular amongst the Monaco faithful either, and it would come to no surprise in the future that he was let go, as he allowed all 8 runs & 13 hits in his 7 1/3rd innings of duty.

The Monacos, down 3-1, would need a miracle to help them win the Season VIII Championship, and in Game V they would get one!

The Specials offense did their part to keep the Monacos from winning Game V, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings. However, Vance, so effective in Game I, was quickly solved by the Monacos in the bottom of the 3rd, when Stargell demolished the 2nd pitch he saw, and put the Monacos within 1, with his 3 run HR.

The Specials would tally 2 runs in the middle of the game, to give them a 6-3 lead, and expectations that they would soon be drinking bubbly. However Vance had been pulled after 5 IP, and the Specials were relying on their unpredictable bullpen. McEnaney would pitch 3 shutout innings, but then came the 9th.

Todd Worrell relieved McEnaney, who was probably running on fumes, and quickly struck out Frank White on 3 pitches. Nonetheless the Monacos had not quite given up yet, and their manager put in a pinch hitter for Wilks. It was the right move, and Bob Thurmam smacked a single. The Specials replaced Worell with Martinez. Martinez made Speaker hit a ground ball, but it was misplayed by the normally solid Eddie Collins, and runners were on 1st & 2nd for Hank Aaron. Many pitchers would have intentionally walked Aaron, but with the super slugging Stargell up next, Martinez had to get Aaron out.

Alas he was unable to do so, and Aaron smashed a two run double to make the score 6-5. Martinez walked Stargell, the prudent thing to do, but Mattingly sliced a single to load the bases for Ernie Banks. Last time the game was on the line for Banks, he struck out. Not this time! Banks fouled off pitch after pitch after pitch until he wore out Martinez and saw something he really liked - and BAM another double, scoring 2 runners and ending the game!

A Miracle had happened! The Monacos had come back to win 7-6! They had won before on the road, so expectations were looking up ...

Unfortunately for the Monacos, they had to start B. Johnson against C. Hubbell ... not exactly an ideal pitching matchup. At first, it looked like it would not matter as the Monacos plated 2 runs at the top of the 1st.

The Specials quickly rallied though, thanks to a 2 run blast from Rickey Henderson. Johnson then allowed another run in the 3rd, 2 more in the 4th, and a 6th run in the 5th inning. He was finally replaced in the starting of the 6th, but the damage had been done. The Specials had a 6-5 lead, and would make it 7-5 after 7 innings.

That would be all they needed, as the Monacos failed to score after the 6th, and gave Hubbell the win, despite an underwhelming outing, and Martinez the save. Hollywood had tried their best, but could not defeat the Specials on this day.
