I usually plan on losing 20-25% of my proxies. If I'm 8 guys back and I'm going to be gone for a while, I'll leave about 8 proxies and I'm usually good. I'm also a big fan of using the "groupings" feature on the site, so if I need a shortstop, I'll rank them in order and put them in the first group, but as soon as I get one, the group goes away. It's worked pretty well for me in the past, because regardless of who's on my list and what order they're in, that doesn't affect the actions of the guys ahead of me.
Granted, this doesn't help much when there's a run on a particular position player, but if everyone goes on a binge for CF, then my odds are better for getting the guy I want in another group, so I don't sweat it. With the player pool the way that it is, there's a lot of positions I can sit back on and wait for and not really lose a step.
