Man I wish I could play the Hammers 30 times a season.

Won 2 of 3 but I am still going to be glad (I think) to see some inter-divisional action for a change! 8)

Guess this is what it is to be in a Veterans league

Postby ArtemusRex » Fri Jun 23, 2006 11:51 am

This is the first league I've been in where there is absolutely no action on the transaction page. Is everybody so completely happy with being mediocre that they don't want to make even one move to improve their team?

Don't get me wrong, I know restraint is a good thing as some players will bounce back and I that rookie managers who are desparate at the middlepart of the season and redraft there team every fifth day is hilarious to watch for veterans. I also realize that my trade offers may be more about what I need and to make the money work on both side and that "BrrrLeee" may be overpriced and not everyone's cup of tea.

Even so, to have no one but me make a transaction is just a little big disconcerting to me. Drafting a team and tweaking it in the preseason is just PART of the game and certainly not worth the $25 we pay to just be here. This isn't Ron Popeil's rotisserie chicken where you just set it and forget it. Baseball is a more organic game that can at worst delve into the One Minute Manager realm of over-managing. But that is true of MLB and baseball at other levels. This is a game that has been derived from not only its Stratomatic probability roots but also the rotisserie BASEBALL and fantasy GM games popularized especially by the internet boom of the 90's. The fun of this game and baseball in general is that it is the great American Past-time. To not get in there and read into the results and stats is to bely the pastime aspect of the game. To just plunk down $25 to essentially watch the clouds go by is a waste.

Anyway, that just my $0.02. I could be wrong.

Well I knew my division would be a tough one, and 17-16 is a solid enough start. In all the other SOM Games you won't see a team play 36 straight games against the same division at the beginning of the season, except here in 2001 (and maybe ATG the Original).

I usually wait until at least the 42 game mark before considering any serious changes. The fact is that if you do not make the right moves, you'll only be hurting yourself twice - first by not adding the right players and secondly because the players you get will be of less $$ value than your original players.

In any case I've played with many of these players in this or similar parks, so I know what to expect from them, and that makes it easier to be patient. If a guy is hitting .250 and you know he's pretty much a lock for .300, that means he'll be hitting over .300 for the rest of the season. ;)

Take Shawn Green for example. I've seen him go 46 HR 127 RBI .304 .590 .380 in 2001 Shea ... so I know he's going to start lighting it up soon enough. 8)

Hmm 42 got it. I've heard thats the answer to alot of things but thats neither here nor there :P

Take Shawn Green... ok but I already tried that in the draft and with an earlier trade attempt :P

Anyway, good points. Like I said, its not that one team isnt making any moves, more that 11 teams are thinking the same. And its not that I havent played the 2001 with veteran teams because I have. Then again, maybe it has a little to do with finishing up a 2006 DH/100M w/ 5/10/20% drop for the last 7 weeks.

If I'd been playing in Cinergy or Wrigley I'd have done the deal you proposed. ;)

Well obviously I cannot speak for anyone else - only myself. I doubt that JKolak feels the need to make any changes though. ;) And the owner in last in the East seems to be AWOL ... so I suppose that explains four owners so far. I'll let the other West owners give their rationales ... but I would not be surprised if it was somewhat along the lines of what I've said. :)

The Hammers are alive, alive.

Just to let you know, I saw them making transactions late today.

Speak of the "devil" Green had a pretty productive night last night - getting 2 hits in each game and either scoring or driving in runs. We won every game in our last at bat!

Team seems to be starting to gel well again as we've won 4 of our last 5 series. Finished West division play with a decent 20-16 record ... now time to play teams from the East & Central!

Gonna be an interesting Summer

While in my holding pattern trying to decide whom to drop and pickup in free agency and while whining that no one was doing anything, did anyone notice that I went 6-1?

BTW, We (the East) will be waiting. Look what we did to the Central.

However, before that can happen, the Hammers are gonna get a second run through of the East. Last night, they showed there first signs of life in the transactions list and took out the once mighty and Central division front runners the Heroes 3-0. Poor Heroes, the rest of their division had the Hammers as sleeping giants and probably totally Hal dependant even for Lineups and Rotation.

Gonna be an interesting Summer!

Quick Poll

Postby ArtemusRex » Sun Jun 25, 2006 7:35 am

[i:bf0417afd5][b:bf0417afd5]Which is more appropriate.[/b:bf0417afd5][/i:bf0417afd5]

Central division = Monkey in the middle

OR

Central division= Tennis ball with East and West having the Rachets

OR

Central division= Kill the guy with the ball (C-Div has the ball)

Any way you slice it the C-Div is hurting. Bet they can't even wait to fight amunst themselves.

I think I will wait til I've concluded the remainder of our first set of games against the Central before deciding. ;)
