We played in the 1990's. Protecting 5 guys annually (min. 1 pitcher, min. 1 batter) and then a 25 rounds draft. I arrived as an expansion team and was very lucky. Brady Anderson was my lucky man and trade mark for stealing when it was criticall. I made one of the guys tear up all of his players cards (he would plays the rest of the season with taped cards haft/haft), one by one when I made a huge comeback. He led by something like 10 and slowly, I came back by any means. Bob Hamelin made it even. Nobody left on the bench. And then, a BB to Anderson. With Brady, I stole the 2nd (easy), the 3rd (alright), the plate (a blast)!

We too always had a guys who had a LOT of games back that would take a LOT of time to complete. We would start AAA teams to kill time with the unused cards we always spilt randomly (Jack Voigt was a star in our AAA). I saw guys made their dices explode in their father stranglehold, vice (éto), dice in the microwave, guys run around the house several times cryin' out lound while Rob Deer would miss (again) a 1-19 homerun, guys fightin' over a unprotected card (Edgar Martinez) , breaking a wall in the fight but what remains is the crazy fun we had.

A couple years ago, when I heard of the existence of SOM online, I tryed to bring back most of these friends to the game. Some came back but most said they were disgusted of the baseball forever (after the lost of the Expos). I miss the Expos a lot but I believe that baseball is greater than amertume and sadness or at least it can help healing from it. What a beautiful game !

Ive been unable to talk my old strat pals into joining me in this pursuit, except for one season from my brother. but manlee, your post brought back the memories of all the old leagues, and yes TC, dating back to APBA, and the sound of those tiny dice in that yellow tube roller. I could go on and on, but suffice to say the memories, the faces, the games, the torn cards, the newsletters,, are all flooding. nothing like poolside strat, getting a tan and taking 2 of 3 in a crucial series. finding tossed dice at the bottom of the pool was a *****

Sorry to hear about your pal's passing, manleeman.

My wheelhouse for paper strato was 1986-1991, end of high school through end of college. We always played basic, the games were done in 20 minutes that way. The best ringer player I ever saw was 1989 Todd Burns, an Oakland reliever who was allowed to start and had one walk and 2 singles on his card. He was like Cy Young.

I had two groups, one in high school and one in college, but no one was ever quite as into it as I was. I always did the stats for everyone. Two college friends and I (both have played a few seasons of SOM-online, but just a few) did get through an 81-game schedule with the 1989 set over the course of a year in college.
