[b:2c46b5f516]Vaughan's 10th inning double lifts Pirates[/b:2c46b5f516]
Arky Vaughan doubled with one out and two on in the bottom of the 10th to give the Pirates a 5 - 4 victory over Detroit in game two of their division series. The victory gives the Pirates a commanding two games to none lead as the series moves to Detroit for game three. The Tigers have to feel they let one slip away, as they gave up 2 unearned runs on 3 errors and coughed up an early three run lead.
Detroit was able to jump out to an early lead on Eddie Mathews three-run homer in the first. But the Pirates started chipping away immediately, as Honus Wagner singled to left against Dean Chance to drive in Paul Waner with the first Pittsburgh run of the game. Big Poison had three hits on the day, including a single during the game winning rally in the 10th.
The Bucs used a pair of unearned runs in the third to tie the game. They loaded the bases on errors by Willie Horton and Donie Bush sandwiched around a walk to Wagner. Pie Traynor brought in one run with a sacrifice fly, and after Bill Mazeroski hit into a fielder's choice, Kitty Bransfield singled in Wagner to tie the game at three.
Mazeroski's solo home run in the 7th put the Pirates ahead for the first time, but the Tigers came right back with a run in the top of the 8th on Ray Boone's double to center against Chick Brandom. Despite blowing the save, Brandom (1-0) came away with the win, going 3 innings while allowing only Boone's double and a walk to Larry Doby in the ninth.
Dean Chance (0-1) took the loss, but left everything he had on the field. The Tiger starter threw 157 pitches in 9 1/3 innings, allowing 5 runs, 3 of them earned. He left with one out in the 10th and runners on first and second, giving way to Daryl Patterson who gave up Vaughan's game winning hit after only 5 pitches.

Chick Brandom got the final four outs while allowing one run to earn his first save of the post season. Ralph Kiner and Pie Traynor each homered for Pittsburgh. Schoolboy Rowe (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs in eight innings of work.

Hoyt Wilhelm (1-0) was tremendous in relief and the Orioles scored 3 unearned runs to take game one of their division series with the Cleveland Indians 5 - 3. Wilhelm retired all eight batters he faced, striking out four. The Orioles scored 2 unearned runs in the top of the ninth for the win. Lou Boudreau committed back to back errors to put runners on second and third with no one out and Willie Keeler followed with a two-run single to left. Boudreau, who committed only 13 errors during the season and was the runner up for the gold glove award at short stop, was not available for comment after the game. Addie Joss (0-1) allowed 11 hits and 2 walks over 8 innings in the loss.

With the wind blowing out at Briggs Stadium, the Pirates took game 3 of their division series with the Tigers 11 - 9 to complete the sweep and advance to the championship series. Twenty-one game winner Doyle Alexander (0-1) got the start for the Tigers in a do or die game, but left after recording only 4 outs with his team trailing 8 - 0.
In a game that saw 20 runs scored and 6 balls leave the yard, none of the pitchers fared well. Pirate starter Sam Leever lasted only two innings, giving up 5 runs. Pittsburgh reliever Roy Sanders (1-0) went the final 3 2/3, allowing only one run (despite seeing the tying run get to second base with two out in the 8th), to get the win.
Honus Wagner tripled and homered, driving in 3 and scoring 3 for the Pirates. Lloyd Waner had 3 hits for the Pirates and Larry Parrish had 3 hits for the Tigers.

Heinie Manush had 3 hits and scored 2 runs for the Orioles. Eddie Murray came through with a two-run single in the fourth to give Baltimore a 3 - 2 lead. An inning later Manush tripled in a run and scored on Frank Robinson's sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.
Mike Morgan (1-0) allowed 2 runs on a Travis Fryman home run, but otherwise held the Indians at bay for the win. Hoyt Wilhelm got the last 7 outs for the save. Rick Waits (0-1) went the distance for Cleveland in a losing effort.

Kiner homered twice for the Pirates in the series opener.

Interesting Race for Last---- rosenthm and I are both doing a lot better in 3 existing leagues After last nite I think I would have a 1 point lead but we both have playoff potential in League 13 with 9 games left and things will probably change on a nitely basis
