Rick's draft log...

Postby Munich_Man » Fri Jun 02, 2006 7:43 am

I started a draft log and actually kept it up through round 19... Here is installment #1--

Round 1-- Ok, Collins is gone, who would have most likely been my first pick. 2B is crucial, but I know Charlie would not mind Evers there, and there’s always White. SS is great, but with offense/$$ a key in a 60 mil league, the premium for defense you pay with Ozzie is a bit much when you can get an Aparicio, Bowa or Concepcion for much less with adequate offense. This allows more pop somewhere else or a better rotation. I could go for Hughson/Dean/Pollet as the anchor for our staff, but I’m guessing one of those three will still be available in round 3. So now we come for value for $$ and minimizing the other team’s chance to score. Muesel or Clemente. Clemente rocks, but picking Muesel will take care of either RF or LF which gives more flexibility for future picks. If Clemente is still available later, even better. CF is the more important position, but I’m betting Geronimo or Stanley will be around in much later rounds which would give the CF defense necessary. Plus, Muesel is one of Charlie’s faves (deservedly so) and it’s his birthday. I know he’s expecting me to go Ozzie or Hughson, since most of the vets know each other’s games so well, so I’ll throw him a bone and start off our team on a good footing. Could have picked Rommel here as well, which would probably make Charlie change his pants, but I’m betting he will be around later also.

Rounds 2-7

Postby Munich_Man » Fri Jun 02, 2006 10:30 am

Round 2/3—Hmmm, Speer. Rather unexpected, I would imagine he would be around longer and would have thought if Charlie were to go this route, he would have taken Rommel, whom I know he has a hard-on for. Now I’m wondering if Charlie wants to go the 3 * and a Speer/Frock/Rommel staff, or a pure 5-man. I have some good 5 man picks, what I consider sleepers, (Gullet, Cecerrelli, Dean) but having a * anchor is always attractive. Who to pick. I’m gambling that Geronimo and Evers will still be around later, and I suspect they will both end up on our roster, so how to proceed? In a $60 mil, it’s all about minimizing the damage the other team can do and maximizing your potential/$$. Not much better in both those categories than Clemente. Two –5s in the OF is REALLY nice, with a probable third in Geronimo. Plenty of talent to fill the other positions no matter who else is taken. VERY tempting to take a stud ($60 mil stud being relative) SP here, but I’ll resist. ATG is so loaded with pitching talent through all price ranges we can afford to wait. Besides, Boyd is already gone, who would have been my choice here. Kaat might have been a choice, but Clemente will be fine.

Round 4—Uh-oh, Evers is gone. Charlie will be pissed. Should I have taken him? Still think Clemente is a good pick. Who will Charlie take now? This is fun.

Mceneney!! Now THAT’S a definite surprise. Worrell, I would have expected here, but Mr. Mac? No way. Nice cheapie in the pen, though.

Round 5—OK, decision time. Shit, Geronimo is gone. There goes my dream –15 OF. Definitely tending towards Hughson here, but I’m still hoping that Hughson/Dean/Pollet will be around a bit later to anchor the rotation, at least one of them I mean. Since he took Speer, I don’t know if he wants to go 3+2 or a straight 5 rotation. If it’s 3+2, Speer/Rommel would certainly make a nice 2. Rommel it is.

Round 6—Pendelton! Nice. But that was going to be MY pick! Weaselled by my own teammate. Now I have to decide again. What to do, what to do. Get a bigger bat? SP, RP Hmmm…

Round 7—Time to anchor the rotation. My man Hughson is gone, so I’ll grab Mr. Dean.

Good stuff Rick. I figured I needed to grab Geronimo before your fifth round pick but when you did not say anything at the time I had begun to question the pick. Good to see I made the right call.
