PETROSIAN'S "BATTLE OF THE SUBSETS" LEAGUE

PETROSIAN'S "BATTLE OF THE SUBSETS" LEAGUE

Postby Minoso Express » Mon Feb 05, 2007 7:53 pm

The Concept:

Here's the concept. A four season league using the default set. Over the four seasons each manager will have one team from the following subsets:

AL Pre-'59
NL Pre- '59
AL Post -59
NL Post -59

We will use all four caps: League 1 60M No dh, League 2 80M no dh, League 3 100M with dh and League 4 $200M with dh. Random assignment to subsets and divisions throughout.

Each manager just limits himself to the teams in the era to which he gets assigned. Thus if I get the pre 1959 AL, I can only draft players in that subset for my team and will be competing against two other managers for players in that subset. It is probably done best as a frenzy or a live draft as with waivers you could end up with a compensatory player from out of your subset. All players on your roster throughout the season must be only from your assigned subset

OTHER NOTES: EACH SEASON FOLLOWS THE END OF THE PRIOR SEASON. EACH SUBSET IS ASSIGNED RANDOMLY.

First Season Divisions:

EAST

Petrosian-post 59 NL
BthnyBchBum-post 59 AL
Warrenbob-pre 59 NL
Regulator-pre 59 AL

CENTRAL

BoDean-post 59 NL
bobschwartz-post 59 AL
Estern-pre 59 AL
ArrylT-pre 59 NL

WEST

redlarkins-post 59 AL
PillPop-post 59 NL
unclerowser-pre 59 AL
Minoso Express-pre 59 NL

First Season: $80M, park chosen from one of your subset parks only, no DH, waivers.

The SOM subsets appear to be pre '61; post '61; AL only & NL only. In setting up a team which subset do I use? Or do I select the default (complete) database and only select pre '59 AL? If we use the entire database to select (or any of the subsets) isn't it likely that HAL will substitute players from out of the subset for those drafted by multiple teams? What do we do in that case?

OR am I missing something so obvious I'll be embarassed when my ignorance is explained and I become enlightened by the simplicity of the solution? :)

I'm picking post-59 players from an NL-only subset. It's odd that TSN/SOM doesn't allow you to filter the subsets twice so you can just pick from a post-59 NL players subset, but that's life. I'm assuming that HAL will give most of us unsuitable players for our subsets and we'll have to correct things through trades, during waivers, and in the post-waiver frenzy.

This should definitely be interesting! I think we'll be playing in the default set, and each owner will just have to make sure that he removes all players from his roster that don't qualify for his particular subset. Waivers should be really interesting, because although the pool will be 1/4th as big, you'll only be competing for a top 3 pick, so theoretically you could be ranked 10th in waivers but be the highest ranked Post '59 AL owner in waivers. ;)

Regardless of the method we sould not be allowed to trade prior to waivers unless both teams involved are in the same subset and both teams and players are from the same subset. e.g., an AL pre59 team could trade an AL pre 59 player to another AL pre 59 team for another AL pre 59 player. Otherwise, it would be unfair as the out-of-designated-subset filler player supplied by HAL should be available to the other teams using that subset.

Perhaps we should prohibit trading inter-subset players; require that teams drop out-of-subset players in waivers before dropping players from within the designated subset; and then requiring any remaining out-of-subset players be dropped first in the post-waiver frenzy.

In the mean time, does it matter which subset we choose for our draft? I have AL pre 59. Should I choose the AL subset or the pre 61 subset? Or simply use the default complete set of players?

Uncleclowser makes good points. I'm not sure about this, but perhaps it does matter from which set we are drafting players. If we all choose NL or AL subsets or pre/post 59, does that mean the autodraft will replace players we draft but don't get with players from our selected subset only? I tend to think the answer would be "yes," otherwise why would TSN make the draft/subset distinctions? If this is, indeed, the case, then we'd avoid a lot of the other pitfalls (pre-waiver trading rules, etc.) uncleclowser mentions.

My vote would be to choose from either pre or post 59 players and deal with the waiver corrections involving AL or NL after the draft.

I'd also like to know what the post-draft, pre-waiver "rules" on trading and dropping.

the league must be default

I think you cannot join a league with a different set, therefore to accomaodate all subsets the league and each of our drafts must be set up as default

i think trading should only be allowed within subsets, for the reasons outlined by others

yup. We must use the default otherwise we're limited to other leagues using just that subset. makes sense.

use the default complete set. no trades unless same flavor. drop outsiders first in waiver and frenzy. may cause a problem if you want to immediatley drop a player within the subset in waivers or frenzy but can't due to the requirement that outsiders go first. honor system will be used. no easy answer i guess.
