Help with pitching in PNC Park

Help with pitching in PNC Park

Postby STEVEPONEDAL » Sun Feb 18, 2007 3:32 pm

So to the wise sages out here,

I need to improve my pitching staff. I am in PNC Park and am 11th in my league in earned runs allowed. In my division is a Comerica Park, Rogers Centre and Jacobs Field.

I think I may be upside-down on my core relief pitchers. I have both Linebrink and Fuentes who both are balanced to lefties. So, of course, I am not doing too good against RHB, hitting .275 against me. I put Linebrink on the trading block to my league but so far no takers.

I think I am also going to flip, Glavine for Josh Towers.

If I have to go FA, in my price range for set-up are R Hernandez, D Riske, R Betencourt and R Hernandez. Closers are T Hoffman, B Jenks, E Guardado.

I was also thinking about going ‘aggressive’ on IBB. I thought that might help Fuentes ‘avoid RHB’. Anyone tried that strategy?

Any thoughts on how to give up fewer runs?

Thanks

Steve

I think your pen settings are a bit funky. You have something like 116 IP by 3 pitchers combined salary of about 2 Mil. On the other hand your other two RPs worth 7.7 Mil have pitched about 70 innings. It should be the other way around.

The way Saves and Blown saves line up also seems a bit funky.

I see you made some changes. Hope they work out for you.

Watchout for those BP settings and good luck.

Funky BP settings

Hi C2,

You noticed that too. I have my Relief setting: aggressive and closer maximize. I have Linebrink and Funtes set at 6th and 8th inning entry, slow hook and avoid blowouts. I also have Fuentes set at avoid RHB. That is what may keep him from getting the saves?

Myers, Vizcaino and Ayala are all set to quick hook, mop-up and avoid XHB batters and all max at 2 innings pitched.

I thought this would keep Linebrink/Fuentes slotted correctly but that doesn't seem to be the case.

It's been puzzling.

Usually, though not always, I designate my closer and setup in the manager settings. I leave their cards alone, meaning no avoids or limits, not even "avoid blowouts" or "avoid using before x inning" or Slow hooks. I usually set my closer usage to max.

My specs usually run on avoid weak side + quick hook only.

When I carry a mopper it's usually my 5th starter in a 4 man rotation and is usually quite valuable as such in saving my pen.

As I said I usually run my pens with variations on the above, it's not a given I'll always do so.

Problem is I usually have a stronger closer, Fuentes has a nice card but I'd feel uneasy with him closing. Even in PNC.

Your designated setup will usually get the bigger load of IP. To some extent as it happens in MLB.

Weird that even with mops your cheapies are pitching so much.

Moppers

Yes, I have had good luck with McClurg, Dowms, Fossum and Woods as my moppers.
