Best setup man?

[quote:7358ed7777]Also remember, that if lidge has pitched 2 innings, and in the ninth it becomes a "closer" situation (ie, you are only ahead by one run), the # of outs he has accumulated go against his closer rating. [/quote:7358ed7777]

I'm not sure this is correct either. I personally can't tell you but i'm almost positive there has been threads on this in the past where it was determined the number of outs DO NOT go against the closer rating. We need someone like Luckyman to chime in on this one....

No, that's correct; the rule is quoted above.

It's really risky to have a C2 or less setup and close. Someone like Gordon is much better in the setup roll, where he can do his thing and then hand off to a fresh closer, cheap or expensive.

I've found my best teams have a closer like Izzy or Rivera, a primary setup guy like F. Rod/Gordon/Gagne/Rincon, a secondary setup guy like Torres or Mahay, and a couple of cheapies like Carter & Quantrill. It's not unusual for me to spend $16M or more on my bullpen. Given the hit or miss starting pitching this year, I don't see how you can go really cheap and hope to be successful.

I very rarely use the manager startegy options for my bullpen. I also never restrict a reliever from when he can come into a game on his card. I will use the avoid rh/lh max 1-2 IP settings on a specialist or two. I try to have at least 2 C3 or more guys and at least a 3 guy with a closer rating. It is imperartive to have at least 3 quality RP that can pitch against both RH and LH. I usually spend 5 plus mil on two RP and an average of 6 total on two others and then have a sub 1mil specialist that is strongest on the side the rest of my pen is weakest on overall. If you restrict hal too much he tends to try to follow instructions too much. You end up with your lopsided relievers pitching against thier week side way to often and your closers don't get in the game enough to make them worth the $ you are spending. Using this set up I have only had a RP pitch 3 days in a row once and rarely get into a situation where I have a fatigued closer in the game. Also always normal on closer and usage in manager settings unless you have 3 studs and another high quality unrestricted guy then you can go agressive for usage.

Lidge update

Postby JEFFFESPERMAN » Fri Sep 30, 2005 1:23 pm

I appreciate all of the responses to my original post. I am now using Lidge as setup man and closer against lefties and righties. He is unbeatable at PETCO and nearly unbeatable on the road. His stats through 96 games are:

6 Wins
3 Losses
23 Saves
76.1 IP
46 Hits
25 BB
91 SO
1.42 ERA
0.93 WHIP

I picked up Duchscherer to eat up innings when Lidge has the day off or the starter gets blown out. It appears to be a match made in heaven since the stablilized bullpen has us back in first place.

I have Gordon, and also Atchison to help him out. they are both doing a fantastic job. I hold the wild card spot so far with only divisional games left and I have a decent record against my division. Am crossing my fingers. Nathan is my closer and he's doing great too.

[quote:3a8d25e033="korkie"][quote:3a8d25e033]Actually, you will notice that relievers do not pitch more than 2 games in a row...[/quote:3a8d25e033]

I know that's what the rule says but Tom is right, it's simply not true. I went back and looked and on the first 2 teams I looked at I found relievers who've pitched in 3 straight games by looking only on the "last 10 games pitched" feature. I'm sure I would have found more if it showed the entire season log. Also note in both instances that it was not an extra inning game, nor was the pitcher the last one in due to nobody else being available.[/quote:3a8d25e033]

Sorry I have ignored this thread for awhile...

Yes Korkie, it does happen, doesn't really make any sense, since this is an intrinsic rule of SOM....but it does happen! No figuring him out eh?? I honestly do not see it happen that much tho, and often, when I am perplexed as to why "so and so" did not come in a game, when I look back, it was indeed due to the fact that he had pitched 2 games in a row. I think HAL will also bring him in if he is not fatigued it seems...whatever....the fact remains that it is one of the rules, and although I have no data to support it, I would think more times than not, it is enforced.... :)
