Building a winning pitching staff ... in a pitcher's park

Thanks Aray; appreciate that. :D

I myself like to have one stud closer and a stud set up man; and maybe even one more set up or closer. Then I try to get a couple of matchup guys and a 1 or 2 mil mop up guy. Then I may try to get one or two very cheap matchup guys that best fit my stadium. All in all, I usually have a bullpen of over 15 mil. Keep in mind, this plan has only worked for me twice. Once I got to the finals, just the other day I missed the wildcard on the last night.

Hi Aray...

Just thought I would give you a look at a couple of Petco teams of mine.

This team ended 2 weeks ago. I really like Lidge as a closer in Petco this season as well as other pitching parks. Linebrink got roughed up early in the season, so the blown saves are a bit misleading.

Pedro was great. Patterson was OK. Lee, Bonderman and Ramirez were late season pickups. FWIW- Bonderman is my favorite non *SP in Petco.

While Wells is not a typical Petco guy, I knew I was going to see 6-7 LHSP's, so I grabbed him.

ended last week.

I took over this team when a manager backed out. It was a keeper league from 2005, that I kinda gutted out and re-did.
I wanted to try only non *SP's and these guys were available.

Hernandez was lights out and stopped a few losing streaks during the season.
Duke actually started out 2-7, and finished strong.
Millwood was a disappointment.

Never used a really strong closer, so gave Turnbow a shot. Decent #'s, but 7 blown saves.

Hitting wise, I won't use Mauer again. Too much $ and too 1 sided as well. Not enough HR power either.

Gomez is my favorite sub $1 sub. He actually platooned vs. LH's on this team. The guy flat out hits.

Garabito is fast becoming my favorite lead-off guy this season vs. RH's.

Mora is a good value this season and I have him putting up similar #'s on another team. Not too crazy about him vs. LH's, but if you play him hit him low in the order.

Winn is a favorite of mine. He hits RH's very well.

Abreu is a guy who either hits over .300 or .250 for me. Either way his OB is usually near .400. I still like his card vs. RH's, but I bat him low vs. LH's.

Brady Clark is a nice, cheap DH.

Well...

Like I said, this wasn't my original team. I was a fill-in for a manager. The FA list was thin and I did what I could to field a good squad.

The FA pitching was a bit stronger than the FA hitting.

IMHO- I think you could go any # of ways. It kinda depends upon how your autodraft turns out. (If you are in an autodraft) If you don't get the guys that you want, you have to field a team with what's left.

I do know this. You must have a couple of guys that can mash. BPHR's on their cards are fine. You will need them in other parks. Make sure though that they have a few natural HOMERUNS too.

In Petco, there are a few ways to skin a cat.

If you go with cheap SP's with BPHR's on their cards, they "could" look like studs when pitching @ home. The problem is with the road games. In hitting parks these guys get hammered. Yes I know about the 81 games at home...but you need to be at least .500 on the road to advance.

The benefit of going cheap with the SP's is that you can load up on the offense.

Conversely, grabbing stud SP's means that your offense will suffer. Like my second Petco team These Aren't My Balls, the pitching was a bit on the expensive side. I did real well @ home and made to playoffs. Problem was I faced a U.S. Cell team on the road, and I pulled a 3 and out routine.

FWIW- My philosophy in Petco, and I'm no expert so take this with a grain of NaCL. I like 1 stud SP,1 2nd. tier SP ($8-$6 million range) and then a couple of $3-$2 million guys.
A nice closer will help out. I like Lidge in Petco. He's a good value.
A $3-4 million dollar setup guy, preferably neutral, and then 2-3 hard R/L guys.
