Can someone help me overcome mediocrity in '06?

[quote:328af9a528="marcus wilby"]What I don't like of your "ideal" SP set-up for a pitcher's park is that you don't beneficiate of your home stadium's biggest asset: its ability to prevent homeruns. Why pay 6M on Smoltz when Radke costs 2M and has about the same on-base, with all BP turning into Steve Balboni's flyball?

As for your line-up above....is this a 60M league?

I can't understand the love for Taveras....the guy hits like...like a 1.74M player!!! Defense ain't bad, but I am not too fond of players who can't hit over .700 OPS...[/quote:328af9a528]

Well lucky, no one ever mentioned using Smoltz, I havn't used pat a couple teams at the beginning for that reason.

But as Taveras goes, he's a good cheap #2 hitter in a pitchers park vs righties, just bat him 8th or 9th vs lefties. As Visick pointed out, great D and low injury risk to boot.

[quote:328af9a528]'ve been in 25 plus leagues now and rarely if ever, have I seen the stud pitcher route successful for 06. Unlike 05, where I believe it was essential to have a stud or two, I've found my successful teams to be heavy on the good hit/good field hitters, and mid range SP's. If you look at the 103 and 96 win teams I presented, neither had a staff of over $23. I've also had 4 other 90 plus win teams, the only one with a staff over $23 million included Pettite, who was outperformed ERA, whip, and wins by both Buehrle and Blanton, who together don't even add up to the price of Pettite. And Dolphins Stadium was a place he should have shined. Heck, on the 103 win team Jamie Moyer had 21 wins, same total as Clemens!!!! [/quote:328af9a528]

Actually I sort of agree with this statement. my high win teams (95+ wins) havne't spent a lot on pitching now that I look at them. but they still had that one stud on top, with 3 cheap options to follow suit. The majoirty was spent on hitting, but that was mainly because I really wanted to get lots of speed, and Lee + roberts isn't cheap.

then again this team won 94:

Had one of my worst seasons from Shields, but went cheap with wickman. 45 saves is nice (15 blown isn't). [i:328af9a528]Another nice little bit of info, Baldwin makes a good lng releiver in those Petco/Kaufmann teams[/i:328af9a528].

Lee and Roberts isn't cheap, but they sure aren't affordable either with a starting rotation totaling $27.

[quote:6f55bf5c90]Last I checked, a sub $2 million CF, that is a 2(-3) on defense with 36.4 hit chances, 39.4 OB chances and 40.8 TB chances ain't too shabby.[/quote:6f55bf5c90]

Well, you're right....when he's not facing lhp....when there is less than two outs....That -17, and that 4 TB of true power, leave me cold. I don't think I have ever seen Tavarez with more than 40 rbis...For one extra million, Kotsay regularly produce 70 rbis....I just had Taguichi producing 85 rbis, with slugging close to .450.

In my opinion, Tavarez is valuable in a platoon, batting 9, with a clutch pinch-hit on the bench...

As far as strategies for this set?

... I really think the set is very versatile, you can win in lots of ways.

The more I play this game, the more I come to terms with the fact that I don't really know enough so as to intelligently contribute to threads like this one.

This year I've been able to gather championships in 60,80 and 100 Mils, DH and No DH, pitching dominant, mediocre pitching, Solid defense, "porous" defense, Righty Parks, Pitcher's parks, lefty Parks, Hitters parks, with studs, without studs, with speed, without speed...

My point being, you can win anywhere, with or without a good draft, the pool is[u:a14ac6ea85] that [/u:a14ac6ea85]versatile IMO.

For what its worth here are my clunkers that have managed to sponsor me with two freebies:

Kaie:ri Nikawera:ke 80 Mil No DH *RH SBC

My favorite team though, was one of my Hit and Runners in Fenway, incidentally, so far it the highest win total for my teams:

Coochie Avengers Fun stuff here: .322 BA off H&R att, all 1 def (2e10 in 3B)

My two cents are far from being the most lucid and when I have pointed my thoughts on the boards, the reply has been that I simply state the obvious, but sometimes the answers [i:a14ac6ea85]are[/i:a14ac6ea85] simple and obvious  :

-Keep in mind what the div. and league are doing but keep playing [i:a14ac6ea85]your[/i:a14ac6ea85] park and [i:a14ac6ea85]your[/i:a14ac6ea85] game. I see a bit too much of playing to the division therefore having mediocre records at home and on the road.

-Don't overuse your pitchers.

-Solid, reliable closer.

-Lots of GbAs in this set so speed helps, not a needed key, but it helps.

-Don't pay for SLG or OBP in spots in the LU where you don't need it.

-Spend some time thinking what you are paying for: Endurance, K, Whip, OSLG, etc in pitchers; defense/OBP/SLG, inj, etc in hitters. Draw a basic LU and pay for what you need in each spot.

-My most relied on staples: O. Hudson and J. Wilson.

-Pitching wise: Mark Redman, J. Duchscherer.

-The park that has given me the hardest time: McAfee

-Try to keep the Batting AVG up, in the face of OBP and SLG I see some players sacrificing the good old SI** that can drive in very valuable runs from second.

I have not played in auto leagues this year so I don't know much about who's in hot demand or not, I am actually quite shocked to learn that Shields goes that highly. The RP pool is so deep that I would never, never spend a top 5 pick in a reliever. Whomever it is, there's another one out there just as good.

Sorry I don't have the magic formula of players to share nor the quick pick park nor the obscure mathematical algorythm to get you to superstardom. My honest advise is: Do your thing, have fun. 8)

P.S. I should point out that everyone who has contributed to this thread has beaten me good and thoroughly this year... perhaps you should listen to them

P.P.S.

[quote:13adceab30]How about going with the speed/defense line-up like:

Mauer/Kendall
Lee
Counsell
Reyes
Figgins (and Bell?)
Crawford
Taveras (and Ellison?)
Ichiro
Lugo (DH) [/quote:13adceab30]

Personally I don't like this one too much, too little OBP, BAvg and SLG.

I am not a Taveras fan, Reyes, Counsel, Lugo... those are players I settle on if I can't get whom I'm after. Just my opinion... and as I said all of you guys have beat me senseless so...

I hate Counsell as well, just doens't perform. Lugo has done well for me though, and the last 3 times I've used Taveras, his BA has been over .290 with decent runs scored! Reyes isn't that geat, just a $$ saver (kinda like Taveras). Ichiro is only good vs lefties, I usually bat him 8th vs R (see it works, Ichiro/Taveras switch spots in the 2/8 hole depending on vs L or R)

Yeah, I haven't had much luck with Counsell either.

C'mon boys... pony up some suggestions then.

How about:

Mauer/Kendall
Lee
Grudz
Figgins/Bell
Vizquel
Crawford
Kotsay
B. Giles
Lugo (DH)

???

Tht'd give me line-ups something like:

Figgins
Lugo
Giles
Lee
Crawford
Mauer
Grudz
Kotsay
Omar

and

Giles
Lugo
Bell
Lee
Kotsay
Grudz
Crawford
Kendall
Omar

and still leave me about $27 mil for pitching?

My prefered (albeit hard to get) lineup would be:

c: Mauer/Olivio
1b: Lee
2b: Roberts
3b: Figgins
SS: Rollins
LF: Podsednik
CF: Taveras
RF: Ichiro
DH: A Sanchez

R: Figgins, Taveras, Roberts, Lee, Mauer, Sanchez, Rollins, Ichiro, Pods
L: Pods, Ichiro, Lee, Sanchez, Olivio, Rollins, Figgins, Taveras, Roberts

Would cost 49.67 mil, be very fast, and though low in SLG, would be good enough for your park. It's jusy my opinion though. At 3more backups at .6 mil average = 51.47 mil, leavs you plenty for a pitching staff.

Once again, that is the team I have been personally trying to get many many times and can never get all of them, in fact I usually miss half of them, and then pick up the cheaper guys to fill in the blanks. May want ot draft someone like Duffy just in case, as he will not be in the FA list after.

I love it... I have never used a single player you've listed (except for Mauer)! :D

I'd think both Lee and Roberts would be worth taking a shot at low on the draft list?

edit: Oops, I take that back. I did use Pods once in a platoon where I missed out on Anderson.
