I have a question about range ratings and the way it affects the type of hit a player might get. It seems that in real life, if an infielder misses a ball due to poor range, it generally ends up being a single. If an outfielder misses a ball due to poor range, it generally ends up being an EBH. Is this true in HAL? Is this always true? How is this decided?
As I put together a team, I am wondering where I can cut costs by having lesser fielders in the lineup and wondering how this affects my team.

Your premise is correct. You can cheat in the corners defensively. The rolls on the pitchers cards followed by an "X" result in fielding ratings coming into play and the chances for the corner positions are less likely percentage-wise to occur. Also, the range factor is less important and the "e" rating more important for the corner IF's. Therefore, someone like C Jones isn't really that bad. However, you will give up more hits with the lower rated ranges. Potentially extra base hits in the corner IF spots and definitely extrabase hits in the OF.

The core of my question (problably badly explained was this) how does HAL determine if an unfielded ball (due to poor range) becomes an EBH?

I believe that when the X comes up there is a roll to determine the outcome, you consult the super advanced charts and the result of the roll tells you wether or not the defensive player made a great play -and if the result of that would be a single out or a double play. or if there is an error and the ammount of bases the error gives or if there is a hit -and the ammount of bases the hit would be awarded.

Basically, I believe, if I understand your question correctly, that you'd have to consult the super advanced fielding charts to find the answer to your question, just like if you were playing the board game -my undestanding is that the computer version CD or On-Line uses the same info of the board charts.

If you use the computer game you can have it display the board game details in which case you can see the rolls, odds, etc.
