Spending for your set-up guy

Spending for your set-up guy

Postby STEVEPONEDAL » Sun Dec 24, 2006 3:41 pm

What do you usually spend on your set-up guys?

I have had Heilman 2) and now Duchscheer. Both in the low $5 Mill. Is there a rule of thumb that you think of for middle relief?

I have a team starting tomorrow in the Metrodome and am using Roberto Hernandez. Also, I have been using setup guys that are no more than 2L/2R. You wouldn’t want your set-up guy more extremely balanced would you?

Thanks

Depends on the makeup of your rotatio i.e. how many innings they'll get. Also the dominance of your closer and rating i.e C3 or C6. Depends on your park.

My main setups have ranged from the low 2s to the 6s Hard to give you a #

In some parks Hernandez can be a great bargain. Will you be facing a good ammo. of Righty hitters?

Below is the link to my team. Generally this league has lots of hitters ballparks. My division has MM Field, RFK stadium and US Cellular. My closer is Wickman, C6. There are 11 LHBs in my division.

How do you approach your managerial settings for relief pitching?
I have 2 other teams and I recently changed my settings to CU: regular and RU: normal. It seems like I am getting fewer blown saves since I made the change.

Thanks for the feedback.

Just my opinion and I am often wrong, but at a quick glance I'd feel a bit uneasy with your pitching staff. As a fairly on the ballpark figure you can expect your pen to pitch from 400 to 450 innings. With your current pen I'd feel a bit uneasy. In particular expecting Wickman to hold those leads.

IMO you have some money in offense that I would move to pitching. E.g. With Redmond catching I'd downgrade Navarro to a .50 - .70 BU. I don't know how you'll play some of your players. Like Your OF: I think you'll have some valuable cash sitting on the bench. With 1B... are you planning on playing delgado there? I have played 5s in 1B but often with 1s up the middle.

Maybe you can take the cash saved from some PT players and redirect them to upgrade your closer. Just my .02 though, you should give your strategies a good shot if they make sense to you.

As far as settings, usually I run on Cl:Max Rel: Normal with avoids the weak side & max 1 to 2 & quick hooks on the specs. Mop on the cheap long relief. Usually designate the same SU to set up both and my CL to close both.

How are you using your 5th starter? As a specialist or as a spot starter vs. LH lineups? If you are thinking about burying him a little I'd also reallocate money from there.

Anyhoo, hope this makes sense. G/L.

My 5th starter

Postby STEVEPONEDAL » Sun Dec 24, 2006 8:18 pm

I was going to use my 5th starter, Fossum, for spot starts and relief against LHBs.
So do you think Wickman is the only weaklink in the bullpen? Would Hoffman be an upgrade?

Do Gonzales or Sanchez fit the bill for middle relief?

Thanks for the tips on settings

I was using Delgado at 1B against RHPs.
