Relief pitcher fatigue

If I remember the rules correctly, a pitcher must have at least one day's rest after a relief appearance before starting (or else face a penalty). But does it matter whether a pure reliever has off days? Can a reliever pitch 6 games in a row, for example, without penalty?

Thanks,

Mark

I can't remember off the top of my head. I think it was 3 games in a row. after pitching 3 in a row the RP must sit the 4th. But I've seen plenty of times pitchers going 4 or 5 games in a row in the OL game. Don't know if they're doing so fatigued or not though.

Thanks. As it turns out, I have the opposite problem: I can't get my high-proced relievers into games at all. Very frustrating to see my LOOGY going 2 innings and giving up 4 runs in what was a tie game.

Seems to me that Hal will try not to use a RP when he's pitched in the previous two games. That would indicate to me that there is some sort of penalty imposed for the third straight game.

Try setting the high priced guys as setup and close. See if that helps. Also make sure their individual settings aren't too restrictive.

Hope this helps,

The computer game uses its own pitch count fatigue system. I don't think any of the board game rules apply. I don't see how it'd help all that much to know anyway, since it's not like you can bring relievers into games or keep them out. Just make sure you have enough total relief innings in your bullpen, and it should work itself out.

SOM rules indicate that when a RP is brought into the 3rd consecutive game, he comes into the game auto-fatigued and will continue to do so until he obtains at least 1 day of rest.

The CDROM version simulates this with a pitch count system of sorts. It takes the R rating and calculates that into an available pitch count indicator. If you look at the RP at the start of a CDROM game, it will astersik the RP with auto-fatigue. You can bring them into a game, but they will fatigue faster and have a lower avilable pitch count pool to start with.

In my years of playing SOM in TSN, I'm inclined to think the pitch count is not used and only teh Advanced RP fatigue rule.

I agree with sykes. In my experience if I have a capable pen I will almost never see an rp pitch more than two games in a row.

That said, Hal will not hesitate to use your closer a third game if you maximize the use of your closer in the managerial settings.

I always try to have the best BP (Nathan setup, Papelbon close) in the league and I set it to Aggressive and Regular... regular means he can come in even if the game is not a save situation aka tied.

Not exactly. Hal will use the reliever to finish the game, even though it's not technically a save situation. Here is an example with heilman (2005):

[code:1:a69ca6ee85]Game 135 FIN relief 0 0 0 1.0 0 0 0 0 ---> team was leading 7-2
Game 134 FIN relief 0 1 0 2.0 5 6 2 1
Game 133 FIN relief 0 1 0 1.1 2 1 0 2
Game 130 SNO relief 0 0 1 1.0 0 0 1 0 ---> save situation
Game 129 MAC relief 0 0 0 1.0 0 0 0 0 --> team was leading 5-1
Game 128 MAC relief 0 0 0 2.0 2 0 1 3
Game 127 MAC relief 0 0 0 2.0 3 2 3 1 [/code:1:a69ca6ee85]

But you are correct to mention that you won't be able to have this pitcher come in a third or fourth straight game as a set/up-closer role. When the pitcher comes for a third or fourth straight game, it's only to work the 9th.

That said, there is also another situation that can prompt a pitcher to come for a third straight game. If you have a reliever for whom you have limited the number of innings (1 IP- 2 IP max), and there is no other reliever left to be used, Hal will use a fatigued reliever to come in and pitch an extra game.
